“Temuka District School Committee’s Report for the year ending 81st Dec., 1883 “ As directed by the Education Act of 1877 your Committtee have the pleasure of submitting for your approval the following repor l- and balance-sheet of the Temnka District School for the j'ear ending 31st Dec,, 1882.

“ Shool Staff—The staff of the school during the year has nndergone several changes. At the commencement of the year it was as follows : - Mr Alex. Mclnto'di, headmaster; Mrs Rowe, second teacher ; Mr Smith, third teacher ; and three other pupil teachers. In the month of April the headmaster and third assistant resigned their posts. Up to the Ist of Juno the school was conducted by a temporary master, when Mr John Wood, whom your Committee had recommended out of a number of applicants L»r the headmastership, took the management of the school. Mr Betlmne was appointed s n cond master, and M r s Rowe became infant mistress. The second master he'd his post till the end of the year, and tlvn resigned, * owing to circumstances over which he had no. control.’ The h°ndmaster having recommended Mrs Rowe to be promoted to Mr Bethnne’s place, your Committee lias adopted his recommendation, and a third teacher for (he school is still required. There is already an available sum of £SOO for building nnrposes in the hands of the Education Board, and it is expected that the Board will see its wav to allocate an additional sum >ut of this year’s building grant sufficient to permit of a new school being erected at an early date. This is urgently reo, uired, as the present buildings are unsuitable in every way. As a temporary relief from overcrowding, the Good Templars’ Hall has been rented, but as this plan divides the school it is not a very satisfactory arrangement, although the best that can be made in the circumstances.

“Expenditure.— The balance-sheet will show that (he funds at your Committee's disposal have been judiciously administered. No expense has been incurred except what lias been nec°ssary for the proper working of (lie school. A small charge for fuel was made on the parents during the winter months, it will bo in the recollection of most of yon that in 1880 a planting grant of £2O was received front the Eduction Board. This sum your Committee of that year devoted to (lie Incidental Fund. Out of this year's funds £2O lias been set aside for the purpose for which it was originally given. Your Committee also collected the sum of ten poun Is (£10) which was spent for the purchase of a number of suitable and valuable prizes for the most successful pupils in school. “Compulsory Cause.—This has been nut in force, and t 1 e result has Justified vour Committee’s action, ns pupils formerly irregular in attendance at school are now regular. It is also gratifying to note that in no case has it been necessan to resort to extreme measures. ‘‘Meetings.—Twelve ordinary and five special meetings have been held during the year at which an average of six members attended, Vour Committee
