Si'. Petersburg, Jan. 14

A terrible catastrophe has occurred at Berediche, a tewn of Southern Russia, in the province of Kiev. During a crowded performance at a circus in the town a fire broke out and spread rapidly, and a general rush from the interioi of the circus ensued. The exits were blocked and many persons were trampled to death in their efforts' to escape. It is estimated that fully three hundred persons perished. The scene is described ns terrible. The catastrophe has created a great sensation, and is only second in magnitude to that which occurred at the burning of the Ring Theatre at Vienna in December, 1881. London, Jan, 15.

Additional tenders to the amount of £IOO,OOO have been received for the Victorian loan. The list will be closed on Wednesday next, when any balance unapplied for will be withdrawn. The immigrants from the ship Wild Deer, which was wrecked on North Rock, on the 13th inst., have arrived at Belfast. They leave there to-nigh t for Glasgow, where they will be reshipped to New Zealand by another vessel.

The various Colonial Ageiita General waited to-day on Karl Kimberley, late Secretary for State for the Colonies. Sir Alex Galt,High Commissioner for Canada, addressing Earl Kimberley on behalf of those present, expressed regret at His Lordship's retirement from the Colonial Office, but hoped that his interests in the Colonies would not be lessened. Earl Kimberley, in reply, thanked them for their kind expressions, and assured them that he would continue to take a warm interest in colonial affairs. The woman named Caroline Higgins, who was found guilty of participation in the Lough Mask murder, was hanged to-day at Galway. Constantinople, Jan. 15.

It is reported that a band of Circassians made an attack on the life of the Sultan to-day, A guard of police, however, prevented an entrance of the wouldbe assassins, and frustrated the attempt, It is stated that the Circassians fought desperately, and that several lives were lost. The reports have caused considerable excitement here, but they require confirmation, Paiui, Jan. 15. M. Buclerc, the Premier, in the Chamber of Deputies to-day made a statement in reference to Egyptian affairs. He reviewed the whole position at length, and concluded by announcing that as England had decided to act alone in the settlement of the Egyptian question, France would, in future, reserve perfect freedom of action in regard to Egypt.

AUSTRALIAN CABLE

Melbourne, Jan. 15

In the cricket match between the Australian team and a local eighteen, concluded to-day at Ballarat, the Australians won the match in one innings, with 100 runs to spare.

A telegram has been received from the Agent-General in London, reporting that tenders for the unallotted balance of the Victorian loan are coming in slowly. Up to Saturday last additional tenders to the amount of £72,000 had been receive.!. The Government has announced that it has not, as was reported at the beginning of this month, guaranteed to maintain the minimum of the proposed redemption of the loan at par. Jan. 16.

The Melbourne manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand (limited), reports of the local grain mar' ct as follows : Wheat (shipping ) per bushel. Is IWd; the market is much steadier. Barley (malting) is active at is 3d to 4s su. New Zealand oats are steady, but not in active demand, at 3s Gd fur feeding sorts, and 4s for milling. SviVNEY. Sailed, yesterday afternoon —Wakatipu, s.s.. for Wellington. Sir W. Jervois and family are passengers by her. BitJSJiANE. Jan. 15. A firo broke out yesterday on board the ship Doris Brodersni. at this port. It raged for some time, but was finally extinguished. The damage done was not serious.
