Tenders for the Victorian four million loan at four percent were opened to-day. The total amount offered was found to bo £455,500 at prices ranging from 100 to 102-|-. Tenders are now invited, until Monday next, for the unallotted balance at the minimum previously fixed, viz., par.
The death is announced ol Sir Samuel Martin, formerly one of the Barons of the Exchequer, aged 82. Jan. 10. Adelaide wheat, e.x store, is worth 48s 6d, and New Zealaul ditto, 43s (id to 46s Gd. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, is quoted at 365.

The failure of the loan in the London market is a complete surprise, and the subject is the topic of general interest at the present moment. Sir William Jervois, who arrived from Adelaide by the s.s. Clyde last night, will proceed by her to Sydney, and thence to Wellington by the Wakatipu.
At their wool sales to-day Messrs Goldsbrough and Co. (Limited), offered 2200 bales, and 2375 were sold at satisfactory prices. Superior greasy realised up to 13LI, and good scoured to 32d.
The Melbourne bakers threaten to strike for an increase of wages.

The failure of the Victorian loan in London is attributed to the high minimum, which is believed to have deterred wholesale application. It is stated that the Colonial Treasurer is hopeful that the balance of the loan will be subscribed by Monday next. The local Press condemn the delay which occurred in issuing the loan, thus losing a favorable opportunity in the London market.
Lady Jervois is at present indisposed, and will remain on board the steamship Clyde instead of proceeding overland to Sydney. The cricket match between (ho Australian team and Eighteen o( Bendigo was concluded at Sandhurst to-day. and resulted in a victory for the firmer by ten wickets.

The re-blcction for East Sydney o Mr G. Reid, the Minister for Public Instruction, will bo opposed by Mr 11. Kingston.
The programme which is about to be laid before the Legislative Assembly by the new Government, embraces amendments of the land laws and the Civil Service Act, reform ot the criminal law, and provision for a larger measure for local self-government, Jan. 11.
