CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS

Messrs Robert Wilkin and Co. report on tbc live stock market for the week ended Thursday, December 28th, 1882, as follows: —At the Addington yards on Wednesday, owing to the holidaysj only a smalt entry was yarded, the attendance being very ranch below the average. Biddings were dull throughout the sale, and the bulk of the stock changed hands at prices a shade below late rates. We sold fair quality crossbreds from 8s 6d to 9s ; prime merino wethers, 7s 6d to 7s 9d ; fat lambs, in large numbers, from 6s to 7s 6d; merino ewes, broken-mouthed, at 3s 3d. Fat steers and heifers from £5 15s to £6 17s 6d ; calves at 81s each. We held the usual weekly sale of sheepskins on Thursday in our N.Z. Wool Stores, at which there was an average attendance of buyers, with more spirited competition than there was at the previous sale. The supply of skins, etc., for this week's sale was limited, which is no doubt attributable to the holidays intervening since last sale. Pelts, green, large and early shorn up, to 5s 8d and 6s 3d ; do, do, small and late-shorn 6s to 11s ; lambskins, large, Is 7d to 2s : do, second quality, Is 3d to Is 7d ; country cross-bred, 4s, 4s 7d to 5s Id ; do merino, large, 4s 6d, 5s to 5s 8d ; do, second quality, 3s 4d, 3s, 3s Bd, 4s 6d. Fat and tallow—-There was a fair attendance of the trade and a spirited demand. Fat, best quality, clean and well saved, to 2£d per lb ; second quality, to 2d per lb ; inferior, at Id per lb. Tallow—None to band. Hides and calfskins not sold. TIMARU MARKETS. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the week ending Saturday last as follows ; Horses.—On account of the holidays there have been fewer entries at their yards, and but little business done. At their yards to-day 36 draught and light horses were submitted at auction. They have to report a very dull demand, and low prices offering. They have no alteration from last report in prices to quote, good draughts being worth from £2B to £BS ; medium and light, from £lB to £22 ; for hacks, from £to to £lB. They sold 18 head at the above quotations. A better demand and also higher rates are anticipated as harvest approaches, and they have several enquiries for good teams for harvest work. Sheep.—There is but little business doing in store sheep, a few lots having been sold privately. Fat sheep are in better demand. They have sold privately during the week 1400 cross-bred hoggets at a satisfactory price. Cattle.—Good forward store cattle arc in better demand. At their usual sale at Washdykc they sold about 140 bead at the following prices : —Steers and heifers, from £3 10s to £o las 60; cows, from £1 to £6 ; yearlings ard 2-yoar-olds, from 26s to £3 Fat earth* —They have sold during the week 21 head prime fat cows at a satistaetory price. '
