NEW YEARS DAY.

The ushering in of the New Year passed off very tamely in Terauka. The starting of the bands for various parts of the district attracted a few people to the streets, but after the midnight hour there was scarcely a soul to be seen, with the exception of some boys who were singing songs. Ihe day broke very unpropitiously, a thick mut enveloping the earth, and obscuring the sky, and it wm thought that holiday-makers wore doomed to another disappointment. Towards noon, however, the fog cleared away, and tho remainder of the day proved everything that couli be desired. No sports bad been improrisoed here, the Caledonian sports in Timaru, now the sports of the year in South Canterbury, engrossing the attention of most who were inclined for this sort of amusement. The 9.30 train to Timaru was crowded with passengers, as was also the express. The former had only a very limited number of carriages attached to it, but accommodation was provided for passengers by attaching a number of goods trucks thereto. This naturally caused some discontent, and we think rightly so. However, it was go in the truck, or not at aU —and one and all elected to take the former alternative. The sperts as usual were very well, attended, and equal to former years. The various events were well contested. The following is a report Quoits (21 yards)—lst prize £3, 2nd £2, 3rd £l.
