TERRIBLE RAILWAY ACCIDENT IN VICTORIA.

A special train, returning from a land sale at I’-oxliill, passed the tlawthornc station \v th nt shipping, and when it had passed the corner of Picl'micnd Park came into violent collision with a tiaiu trom Melbourne to iJaw'horn n, (ravelling (-n the same line of rails at a speed of twenty miles an hour. The engine of the (Melbourne train was driven through a first-edass carriage next to it, which it completely telescoped, the engine penetrating the greater portion of the vehicle. The second and third oi the liJnwtiiornc Iruiii \acio likewise telescoped, the wheels of one c image r s-mg on the scats of the other. There were many passengers in the train at the time of (he collision. From 20 to 30 are injured. Dec. 3. One mxt the engine of the train from M.-Ihomne was driven rght through the next carriage The scene i t the accident was most distressing. Seveiai of the passengers were only extricated from the wrecked carriages with extreme difficulty. Many of the injured were Icarlnlly cut about the head, and several have broken legs, arms, and ribs, and internal and spinal injuries. Thirty-nine of the sufferers nre now 7 in the Melbourne Hospital and several are in the Albert Hospital. So far as it is known, no prominent citizens have been hurt. The accident is attributed to the special train from Boxhill passing Hawthorne without stopping to allow the other from Melbourne to pass. There is great excitement in town over the catastrophe, and the Melbourne newspaper offices are crowded with people anxious for news. Later. According to the latest information Mr W. Thomas has died from the effects of the injuries received, and Mr Eos is in a hopeless state. Fight. No further fatalities lias as yet resuite 1 from the ’oilway accident.
