A BURNING STEAMER.
The passengers of the steamer Gilbert have landed at Plymouth. It is reported that the vessel narrowly escaped burning on the 28lh July through a fire in the aftermost watertight compartment in the maiu hold. The captain had provided for the abandonment of the ship, but two large holes were afterwards cut through the deck and the compartment was flooded. The passengers subscribed £IOOO for a life-saving boat, and expressed their warm appreciation of the conduct of the officers and crew. The damage to the vessel is £IO,OOO. During the fire the cabio passengers remained drawn up upon the deck awaiting orders. Most of the steerage passengers were Polish Jews, who howled and screamed horribly. The course of the vessel was changed so as to bring her into the most fiequented track of shipping. When the deck was cut the iron was found to be red hot. If the fire had continued a few moments longer it must have communicated to the state rooms, and a large quantity of_ resin, when it would have been impossible to save the ship.
