V.R.C. SPRING MEETING.
The attendance at the Melbourne racecourse on Tuesday was very large. The weather was cloudy, and some rain fell. Maiden Plate, 1L miles—Belmont, 1 ; Caloma, 2 ; Gostwyck, 3. Eight started. Time—2min 44 2 lOths sec.
Railway Stakes, miles—Boolka, 1 ; Coulstone, 2 ; Larpent, 3. Six started. Time 2raiu 13sec.
Kensington Stakes, 5 furlongs— Lady Jervois, 1 ; Halifax, 2 ; Off Color, 3. Sixteen started. Time —Imiu 64 secs. Melbourne Cup. two miles—The Assyrian, 1 ; Stockwell, 2 ; Gndarz, 3. Twenty-three started. Stockwell went away at the start, and remained in front most of the way, attended by Plying Jib, Gudarz, and Little Jack. They ran in much this order until the distance was reached ,where Darebin looked dangerous, but his weight told against him. The Assyrian then came in flying, and won by half a length, and the same length separated the second and thiid horses. Time—Brain 40sec. The Darling Stakes —Essex, 1 ; Sinking Fund, 2 ; Tamworth, 3. Five started.
Yan Yean Stakes, 1 mile— Bagot, 1 ; Colewort. 2 ; Verdure, 3, Nineteen started. Time—lmin 45sec.
