TIMABU MARKETS. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week as follows : Horses.—Their expectations of last Saturday as to a large number being brought forward for their special sale on Thursda}' were fully realised, their entry for that day of 115 bead being hitherto unequalled either for number or quality. Messrs Allan and Stumbles' string of draught brood mares, fillies, and colts were admitted to be the best lot ever offered by one owner in the district, and Mr J. H. Raine's mare and her progeny were a special feature in the sale. Their sales for the day were 58 head, and notwithstanding the quiet stale of the horse market, prices realised were highly satisfactory. The principal lots sold were on account of Messrs Allan and Stumbles : Buy mare Princess, to Mr Andrew Martin, £6B ; white mare Maaggie Lauder, Mr Wra. Gillespie, £35 ; bay mare Nelly, Mill. J. Dalgleish, £37 ; chestnut mare Mary Blase, Mr Win. Gillespie, £43 ; brown mare Lady Clyde, Mr A McKenzie, £36 ; bay mare Miss Wallace, Mr E. Menlove, £47 , do do Olarindn, Mr E. Menlove. £4l. ; do do Maggie Or, Mr Jos' Houston, £26 ; bay filly Queen Elizabeth.. 2-year-old, Mr A. Mirtin, £37 ; do do Queen of Scots, 2-year-o'd Mr A. Martin, £34; do do Queen Margaret, 2-year-old, Mr A. Martin, £26 ; yearlingcolt, dam Mary Biane, Mr E. Evans, £4O; also, hackney mares and geldings fair prices. On account ot Mr J. 11. Raine— The bay mare Duchess to Mr E. Menlove, £B2; bay filly, 2-year-old, to Messrs McGoverin and Hardy, £65 ; yearling colt, Mr H. J. Hall £4l. At their yards on Saturday 62 head were entered, consisting principally of medium to first-class backs and a few good draught mares and geld ings. They disposed of 25 head at from £25 to £33 for good draughts ; £l7 to £2l for medium ; hackneys and light harness horses, £l4 to £2l for good sorts and £6 to £l2 for inferior to ordinary. Cattle.—At Washdyke yards on Monday there was a large entry of stores, but prices realised did not show an}' improvement on last quotations. They sold 105 head at, for calves, 19s to 21s ; yearlings, 30s to 41s ; 2-yenr olds, £2 10s to £3 10s, accordiug to size and condition. Sheep.—Their only transaction during the webk was a line of merino ewes and wethers sold at Washdyke on Monday at 6s Gd each. There is littla prospect of doing business in store stock of any kind until a change of weather sets i-j, feed being very backward on account of the long-continued drought.

CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS

Messrs Eobert Wilkin and Co. report: — At the Addington yards ou Wednesday, 6931 sheep and 397 head of cattle came forward. In fat sheep a large supply was yarded, but the quality was not equal to late supplies. We sold prime cross-breds (heavy weights), shorn, at 13s 13s 3d ; good ditto at from 31s Gd to 12s 3d ; a draft of Leicester hoggets from ]3s 9d to 14s 9d ; a draft of 800 cross-bred medium hoggets at 10s 6d, and fat cattle equal to late rates.

There was an average attendance ef buyers, with good competition, at the weekly sale of sheepskins, which we held in our New Zealand Wool Stores on Thursday. We catalogued 2894 skins, amongst which were some large lots of station skins, disposed uf at from s|-d to 6h\ per lb. Butchers cross-bred, large, 5s lid, Gs 6d, 7s 3d ; do do, second quality, 3s lOd, 4s 6d, 5s 2d, 5s lid ; do merino, large, 5s 7d, 6s Id, 6s 7d ; do do, second quality, 4s sd, ss, 5s 7d ; do lambskins, lOd to Is 4d ; do pelts, 8d to 101 ; country crossbred, large, 5s 9d, 6s sd, 7s ; do do medium, 2s sd, 3s 3d, 4s Id. 4s lid, 5s 9d ; do do, small, Is 6d, Is lid, 2s 5d ; do merino, large, 6s, 5s 7d, 6s 3d ; do do, medium, 2s Id, 3s Id, 4s, 5s ; do do small, Is 2d, is Bd, 2s Id. Fat—Best quality, clean and well saved, to 2fd per lb ; second quality, to 2fd per lb ; inferior at lfd to lfd per lb. Tallow, in small lots-, at 2id to 2|d per lb, and 30s Gd per cwt. Hides— Sound, dry, at 4d per lb ; ordinary salted, at 3-f d per lb. Calfskins, sound, at 4d per lb ; cut and otherwise damaged at 2d per lb. ■
