ENGLISH AND FGREION. j London, Sept. 8, j The Bank of Australasia has declared a dividend, of 6 per cent for the past half-year. New Zealand securities remain at last quotations. The Bank rate of discount remains at 4 per cent, and the market rate at Bs. Adelaide wheat is unchanged at 48s, ex warehouse, and New Z#alancl ditto at 46s to 4Ss. At the wool sales to-day the catalogue comprised 11,000 bales. Fine sorts were in very good demand. Sept. 8. A majority of the Irish police constables who were dismissed for being proTiOters ©f the recent agitation have now been reinstated by Earl Spencer, the Lord-Lieutenant, and have returned to duty. A force of French marines have been landed at Madagascar to protect French interests. Intelligence is to hand that the clifficu'ty which has existed for some time past between Japan and Corea has now been arranged. Under the terms of the arrangement the latter Kingdom will pay the indemnity which was demanded by the Japanese Goverment. Sept. 9. China has occupied the capital of Corea, and has reinstated the former King. At the wcol sales to-day 11, (00 Sales were catalogued, and of these 5000 were withdrawn. A portion, however, has since been placed. Long and good conting fully maintained last June rates, flowing a distinct advance. Other Borta were unaltered. Sept. 10. Lord Kimberley has requested each of the Colonies to appoint a representative at the Bordeaux Wine Exhibition. A Western Australian loan is expected to be placed on the market (jUortly.
The population of Iceland is being decimated by famine and measles. . -• AUSTRALIAN CABLE Sydney, Sept. 8. A new comet, with a well defined nucleus, equal in brilliancy to a star of the second magnitude, is how visible in the eastern sky, its tail extending over an arc of three degrees. The apparent motion of the comet is slow, and towardthe north and east. Sept. 9. The sermon at the opening of St. Mary's Cathedral yesterday was preached by Bish-p Redwood, of Wellington, New Zealand. The offertory on the occasion amounted to £2200. Sir Henry Parkes has been unwell since his return from Europe, but is now better. New Zealand wheat has advanced 2d per bushel during the week, nnd is now quoted at 5s sd. New Zealand oats remain at 3s 3d, and maize at ss. Adelaide, Sept. 8. Wheat continues firm at 7*. Town flour per ton is quoted at £l4 15s, and country brands, £l4 5s to £l4 19s. The freight market is dull. Melbourne, Sept. 8. Arrived, this morning—Union Company's steamer Kingarooma, from the Blufif.
