TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held last Tuesday. PresentMessrs John Talbot (Chairman), R. A. Barker, J. Austin and J. Paterson. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £383 5a 5d were passed for payment. INTERVIEWS. F. A. Barker interviewed the Board to support his request to make a road from his homestead to connect with the Winchester and Beach roads and the Ohapi road. f In addition to his offer of £25, he atated that he would fence the road at x cost of £3O. It <ras resolved to do the work. Mr Uprichard asked to have the footpath near the Catholic Church formed. It was agreed to do the work. Messrs Walker and Scott, of Waitohi, waited on the Board, and pointed out the necessity that existed for shingling t Grant's road. It was simply impassable. In some places the water was laying on the road. The Chairman said that there weie no many roada to be shingled, and tUere was such a limited turn of money at their disposal, that they would fc»T© t? to»ks

into the matter. The water laying on the road would be attended to, but the question of shingling the road would have to be postponed until it was ascertained what roads were neceaeary to bo done in the district. The deputation then withdrew. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read from Mr P. Wareing pointing out that a drain passed to be done three months ago had not been yet done. It was resolved—" That the Board are not aware of having agreed to do the work alluded to, but that they did affree to clean out a drain near the Boiling Down establishment on Marshall's road.and it had been done. There appearantly being some misunderstanding, Mr Wareing's attention be drawn to a resolution of the Board, viz.. that only such drains be cleared as are damaging the roads." From Mr F. Turner, asking for five or six drain'pipes, so as to enable him to get to his section in Vine street, at the back of Mr Essery's. Granted. From Mr J. T. M. Hayhursfc, stating that the road-drains emptying out of Mr Wooodhead's farm into the road drains were full, owing to the latter being blocked up, and asking th-s Board to have it cleared. The work was ordered to be done.

From Mr J. W. White enclosing an opinion to the effect that the Board had no power to alter the rate book, and that in the event of a ratepayer giving up his holding after the rate roll had been passed by the°Assessment Court, the Board could not insert the name of his successor in the rate roll.

From Mr Edgeler stating that he was rated for a section ho did not own. It was decided that the valuation should be sent to the right owner next

year. A petition signed by Mr F. Franks and others, asking the footpath from the Star Hotel to the bridge might be shingled, as it was the favorite promenade of the lady pedestrians of the town was read. Tenders were ordered to be called for the work.

From Mr Postlethwaite M.H.R. (telegram) giving information re alterations in Timaru Harbor Board Bill, and stating that the Government will not proclaim the district under the Rabbit Nuisance Act. From R. Darroch asking for timber to build a culvert to his property. Granted.

From Mr G. Latimer, claiming money due to him from the Board for extra work done to the Opini bridge, It was resolved—" That the application cannot be allowed as Messrs Measou and Landgridgfc had refused to certify that it was a just claim." RESIGNATION OF THE BOAED. The Chairman said he believed it would not be wise to take any steps with regard to resigning so aa to bring the land between the Board and the Geraldine Board under the Temuka Board. There was an Act to be passed this sessien and that would aecessitate the whole Board resigning in June next. The matter was therefore left in abeyance. WOBKS TO BE DONE. Mr Austin stated that Mr Grant asked him to bring before the Board the necessity of a ditch on the east side of the Dew road at the Orari, and that * cutting V ahbutd be made into the river, afld some willows planted above it The cutting ani willows were ordered to be done. Mr Paterson brought before the Board th« necessity of taking the water off Mr Grant's gateway, • The work was ordered to b« done. It was also agreed to get the hollow at Sod Town bridge filled up, and the drain opposite Mr "Waddel's cleared out from where it was already done to opposite Mr Waddel's house. SPECIAL MEETING. It wai resolved to hold a special meeting of th« Board at 2 p.m. next Monday, for the purpose of considering the new Bills relating to Road Boards now before Parliament. *' ADJOURNMENT. The meeting then adjourned.
