CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered : From Mr Scott, stating that the land at the Rangitata for which he was rated was now occupied by Mr Robinson, and asking that the latter’s name be placed on the rate book. The Chairman said he believed this cftuld not be done, as the valuation roll had been passed by the Assessment Court, and no alteration was allowed by law to be made in it. It was decided to obtain a legal opinion on the matter. From Mr F. H. Barker asking the Board to make a road through Mr Hayhunt’s property from his own house to the south road. Mr Hayhurst was willling to give the land for £25 per acre, and he (Mr Barker) would give £25 towards the cost of it. After some discnsaion, from which it appeared that the purchase of the land and the formation of the road would coat about £250, it was decided to refer further consideration of the subject till next Board day. TIMARU HARBOR BOARD. From the Timaru Harbor Board asking the co-operation of the Board in obtaining the consent of the ratepayers of the district to raise a loan of £IOO,OOO to complete the Timaru Breakwater. The Chairman said he thought they should use every means in their power to assist th* Harbor Board in carrying out the harbor works. He did not think the-people would ever be culled upon to pay rates. There was £IOO,OOO spent already on the work, and he believed about as much more would make a good harbor there. The harbor fees would pay for this, and there would be no necessity for levying rates. There was no doubt that if there was a good harbor in Timaru it would be a great boon to this district. It was resolved- “That this Board, will heartily co-operate with the Timaru Harbor Board in obtaining the consent of the ratepayers to the proposal to borrow £IOO,OOO, being of opinion that it is of permanent importance to this district that harbor works should be carried to a successful issue.” The Chairman brought forward the question of the constitution of the
Timaru Harbor Board provided by the Bill now before Parliament by Mr Sutter, from which it appears that the Borough of Timaru is to have six members while the outside districts shall have six moie. It was resolved —That the district member’s attention be drawn to the proposed Harbor Board Bill of Mr Sutter, stating that this Board are of opinion that by its provisions a most unfair weight of representation is given to the Borough of Timaru. ” RABBIT NUISANCE. Mr Ensor said there was a petition going about for signature which had for its object the bringing of the Babbit Nuisance Act into force. He thought they ought to take some steps in the matter. He would our Mom ber’s attention be called to a petition now in circulation to request the Government to bring the Babbit Nuisance Act into force in South Canterbury. (1). That this petition has been signed by a number of persons who are in no way interested in the matter. (2). That it has been proved without doubt that with the spread of population, rabbits have either entirely disappeared or else are in such small numbers as to be quite harmless. (3). That it is the opinion of this Board as the representatives of the settled population that the Act is unnecessary and entirely against the wishes of the com munity.” PROPOSED RESIGNATION OF THE BOARD. Mr Austin brought forward the question of the Board resigniug in a body next election time to enable the land between the South road and the railway to be made a part of the Eoad Board district. The drain by the side of Ohapi road, and the road leading from the Ohapi road to Mr F. Barker’s also wanted clearing, and in some places enlarging.
