SUSPICIOUS CASE.
An Oaraaru telegram states the body of a woman partly dressed was found in a creek near Peebles on July 2nd by a man who is employed on the water race. The body has been identified as that of the wife of Alexander Beattie. It was thought that deceased and her husband were not living on good terras, as about a month ago Beattie was airested and bound over to keep the peace for threatening to burn the house of a nelgbor in whose house he had found his wife. On returning home after being released he found that his wife had disappeared and had not since been heard of. Later news states that the post mortem on the body of a woman found in a creek near Peebles was not held on July 3. A jury was'empannelled, and the evidence went to show that when the woman was taken out of the water a handkerchief was found to be lightly tied round her neck, and there was a wound in the throat and a bruise on the face. A portion of the dress had blood stains on it. .Richard Beattie has been arrested by the police on suspicion.
