GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of this Council was held on Wednesday. Present —Mess C. G. Tripp (Chairman), J. Mendelson, W. Moody, J' C. McKerrow, J. Talbot, A. Sherratt, G. F. Clulee, and the Secretary. Th« minutes of the last meeting were read and cofinrmed. The Government circular, [submitting a series of questions to the various County Councils of the colony, was gone through seriatim, and an opinion recorded against the majority of the sixteen queries, the consideration of a few being deferred for next meeting. The Secretary was directed to write to Mr Hall conveying the congratulations of the Council on his having been knighted. It* was resolved —“ That a monthly return of expenses in connection with the working of the Licensing Act be placed before the Council,-showing amount expended up to each date of meeting. This to include expenses from commencement.” A letter was read from the Ashburton County Council on the subject of an im. proved method of collecting grain statistics, and suggesting that threshing machine proprietors should furnish returns of grain threshed by them in each district. After some discussion,it was resolved—- “ That the Government be asked tp make it compulsory on owners of threshing machines to make declarations of the quantities of grain threshed in the districts in which they work. Returns to be made to 31st December each year ” A letter was read from the Geraldine Road Board, on the subject of striking a rate for hospital and charitable aid pur. poses, and forwarding a copy of resolution passed by the Board, to the e Sect that as the Geraldine County Council were without funds for this purpose, and there being no prospect of their acquiring any without striking a rate, it was proved that the Counties Act did not work satisfactorily ; and asking the Council not to take further steps in the matter until after the meeting of Parliament. From the Mount Peel Road Board, on the same subject, stating that they would strike a sixpenny rate, if other Boards did the same. The Mount Peel Road Board wrote complaining that the- dog tax collector failed to visit the Woodbury and Peel Forest districts.. It was resolved—“ That in reply to the Mount Peel Road Board’s letter re difficulty in getting in.the dog tax, they be allowed to employ what amount of assistance they may require.” Correspondence was read in reference to a - , stockbridge oyer the Opihi, and it was decided on the motion of Mr Talbot, seconded by Mr Sherratt—“That the Conn'oil are of opinion that the proposed bridge would be of public utility, but would more especially benefit the Mount Peel district, and would recommend the Mount Peel Board to offer to pay the greater part of the cost. Accounts were passed for payment to the amount of £47 13s 3d.
