THE TROUBLES OF EGYPT.
(By Telegraph.)
Cairo, May 10 (Morning.)
The Khedive has commuted the sentence of exile recently passed upon 43 Circassian ; officers for, conspiracy to assassinate Arabi Pasha. His Highness has taken this step in spite of the opposition of his Ministers, who, it is believed, are. seeking to depose .him. The situation is critical, and it is, reported that the Foreign Consuls resident, here liaye summoned the ironclads of their countries now in the Mediterranean to Alexandra in view of;a possible complication. Evening.,
A Proclamation, summoning the Chamber of Notables to meet forth-, with, was issued today. The Proclamation is signed by Ministers, but it is known to have been issued without the sanction of the Khedive. The attitude of the Ministry has • assumed a more antagonistic aspect towards His Highness, and it is considered that the deposition of the latter is now inevitable unless the designs of the Nationalists are thwarted by the immediate intervention of the Powers. In the event of the deposition of the Khedive being effected, it is understood that Arabi Pasha will aspire to supreme power, and that he will receive the support of the other members of the Ministry and of a large section of the people. Ministers' have communicated to the various Foreign | Consuls their intention of taking steps for the protection of the lives and property of Europeans in Egypt; but they have also informed the representatives of Foreign Powers that they are ; determined to resist any attempt which may be made by the Sultan to occupy the country with .Turkish troops.
