THE SOUTH ORARI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of this Committee whs held on ,Fiiday,9lli inst. Present—Messrs R. A. Barker (Chairman), Wadsworth, Bates, Turpin, Ricard, May and McLeod.

Four applications for the position of teacher were considered, and the Chairman was authorised to forward the Committee’s selection to the Board, and to request that in the event of the new teacher not being able to commence work on the 22m,, a locum tenens might he appointed. A letter was read from Mr Sumner asking permission to give up charge of the s hoA on Friday, 17th. at 3,30 p.m Granted. The ordinary meeting of (he same Committee was held on Saturday, March 18, 1882. Present —Messrs R. A. Barker (ChArman), May, Bates, McLeod, and Wadsworth. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman stated that the accounts for the past year had been audited, that ho had received no communication from the Board re the appointment of a teacher, and that Mr Sumner had left on the day agreed upon, but as yet lie had not sent L- the usual monthly report. R -solved connected with the reopening of the school under a new teacher be left with Messrs May, McLeod and the Chairman.” Mr May reported that he had taken delivery of the school books, etc., from Mr Sumner, and that everything appeared to be satisfactory but that owing to an account book hiving been sent to Christchurch by mistake he would not be able to make a complete return until next meeting. Mr Wadsworth was appointed visitor for the ensuing month. Mr McLeod moved “That it is desirable for the future advancement of the South Orari School that its boundary be extended northward as indicated in the map produced ; and that a copy of this resolution, with ihe map, be forwarded to the Board of Education, requesting that (be necessary steps be taken to extend the boundary as shown.” In speaking to the resolution, Mr McLeod pointed out that the proposed extension would not encroach upon any other district; that it would bring a number of children within school bounds which number would soon be largely increased ; that when a traffic bridge was built (there being at present only a railway bridge) many of the future inhabitants would be within the compulsory limits ; and that in the event, ot the Education Act being amended so as to allow of school rates being levied, the increased area would be found of considerable value to the school. Mr Wadsworth seconded the motion, saying th: t he could see, no possible objection to it. Mr Bates said that although he did not intend to oppose the motion, he wished jt placed on record that he considered it unsafe for children to cross the river until a traffic bridge was built; also, that in the locality mentioned there are at present only five children that could come under the Act. Mr McLeod etatad that Ms children had ] been crossing the river with safety regui laxly during the past ten mouths.

On the motion being put it was carried, nil voting for it except Mr Bates, who did • net vote. After,, account thaJ had been deferred from last meeting, the Committee adjourned to the third Saturday in April.
