ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, March 4. In the House of Commons last night Baron De Worms introduced a motion v demanding that the English Government should remonst ate with Russia against the persecution of the Jews. Mr G adstone opposed the motion, stating that any action on the part of England, beyond mere friendly counsel to the Russian Government, could have no good effect, but would on the contraiy only tend to do harm to the cause of the oppressed Jews, The discussion lasted some time, and the motion was finally withdrawn, An attempt was made yesterday by Mr Simons and Colonel Brine to cross the English Channel in a ballon. When they had got some distance out to sea the balloon descended, and after floating for aome time it and its occupants were picked up by a passing vessel and brought to Dover. At the wool auction today 10,600 jbales were offered, and the tone of the market continued firm, March 6. Information is to hand from Brussels to the effect that the pcliGe have arjrested a party of men in that city who pre charged with being concerned in the robbery of diamonds and other valuables from the Hatton Garden Post-office in < November last. Adelaide wheat, ex store, remains at 545, and New Zealand ditto at 495. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, has further declined Is, and is now quoted at 38s. Australian tallow, best beef, 40s ; best mutton, 455. Australian leather, best side's are quoted at 1 Id. At the wool sales today 10,000 bales were offered, making a total of 55,600 catalogued since the opening of the present series. The bidding was animated.
Mr W. E. Porster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, addressed a meeting at Tallamore, King's County, today, and in the course of his speech he reproached Irishmen tot yielding to terrorism which had been prevailing, and added that Government were determined that neither landlords nor tenants should mar the effectiveness of the Irish Land Act. Mr Forster further announced that the imprisoned suspects would be released when the outrages which still prevailed had ceased. The Chinese Exclusion Bill now before t e United States Senate is generally approved of throughout California, and monster meetings are being organised in this city and other towns in the State for the purpose of preparing petitions to Congress in support of the measure, and to agitate in other ways in favor of its becoming law. Washington, March. 6. Most disastrous floods have occurred in Arkansas and adjoining States m the south, owing to the overflow ot the Mississippi and its tributaries. An enormous extent of country is flooded, and thousands of home 6 have been devastated, and a great loss of life and stock has resulted, ft is estimated that fully 50,000 persons have been rendered destitute, and that in the State of Arkansas alone 20,C 00 head of cattle have been drowned. The United States Senate are now discussing a Bill for the total exclusion ipf Chinese from America.
AUSTRALIAN. Melbourne, 7. The cricket match between the English and Australian Elevens was resumed today, and resulted in a victory for the latter by six wickets, Sydney, March 7, A boat capsized in the harbor today, and two Italians who were in it were drowned. The residence of Mr Pernell, at Randwick, was totally destroyed by fire today. The building and furniture weie only partially insured.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, March 7. The Harbor Board have decided to raise a loan of £150,000. When Tawhaio heard of the i terview between the Native Minister and Rewi, he sent a message telling him not to discuss matters nor to take any action till after meeting day at Auckland, At the sale of the Rotorua township, the-average increase on the upset price of allotments was nearly 50 per cent, and in some cases 100 per cent. Mr Duncan, of Wellington, bought the first, and he was one of the largest purchasers, The Bank of New Zealand purchased several town lots. The suburban and rural lands brought an increase over the upset price of from one to two hundred per cent. Wellington, March 7. The Premier having neglected to pay his property tax in time, was mulcted in the ten per cent penalty. Christchurch, March 7. The open courts of the Exhibition . will be lighted with Edison's light. A cable message has been received that four additional bays will be required for Austrian exhibits at the forthcoming Exhibition, Arrangements are being made to light the interior of the quadrangle with the electric light. Applications for space are still pouring from all parts of New Zealand. Dunedin, March 7. The Otago Rowing Club have selected the following crew for the Interprovincial Race, to take place at Christchurch just before Easter ?—LeCren (bow), Dr. Roberts, 2 ; Fowler, 3 ; Aspinall, stroke. Four houses in Stuart street, which were occupied for years by women of the town, were completely destroyed by fire this morning. They were leased by one Kate Walker, who had not her furniture insured. The houses were owned by Mr W. Watson, who had them insured tor £l5O in the Standard.
