ATTEMPT TO SHOOT THE QUEEN.

A telegram dated London, March 2, says :—The attack upon the Queen at Windsor has caused great excitement here, and much satisfaction is expressed at Her Majesty’s providential escape. After firing the first- shot at the Queen without effect, McLean attempted to discharge a second barrel of a six-chambered revolver with which he was armed. A bystander, however, rushed upon him,

and prevented him from doing sop seizing his revolver, and throwing the wiruH-be assassin to the ground. With great difficulty the police prevented the crowd from lynching him, but after a severe struggle he was rescued, and taken into custody. Her Majesty displayed great courage on the occasion, appearing calm and unmoved throughout, and on her return to the castle, received her guests at the usual dinner party. The police have since ascertained that McLean is a Londoner. He was formerly employed as clerk, but has been out of work for some time, and is supposed to be insane. No motiv e can be assigned for the outrage. It has no p olitical significance. The shot wag fired straight at the carriage which her Majesty was about to enter previous to driving to the Castle. The man who fired the pistol is a miserable object named Roderick McLean. London, March 3. The Queen continues well, her h alth having in no way suffered in consequence of the attempt upon her ife. Universal sympathy is manifested towards Her Majesty, telegrams having been received today from the various Foreign Courts testifying to the sympathy which is felt, and expressing gratification at Her Majesty’s providential escape irom injury. Toe bullet which was filed from the assailant’s revolver has been found near the scene of the outrage. The wrisoner, Roderick McLean, was brought up today at the police court, and charged with an attempt on the Queen’s life.. He wa quite collected, showing no. symptoms of insanity, and pleaded that povert drove him to commit the outrage, He declared that he had no intention of murdering Her Majesty. He was remanded to. Friday next. McLean was formerly confined as a lunatic. Melbourne, March 4. His Excellency the Governor has telegraphed to Earl Kimberley, Secretary of State for the Colonies, convey-, jog congratulations on the escape of’ Bier Majesty from the attack recentlymade upon her life. Wellington, March 5,' On the Premier’s return tomorrow, a, congratulatory message to Her Majestywill probably be dispatched, by Goiernr-. merit.
