DROWNED THEM DEAD.
At the Dalkeith Police Court recently, a fish-hawker, named John Mulheron, was brought before Bailies Watson and Alison, charged with having cruelly illused and tortured four pups, by burying, them, alive. Prisoner—“ I am not guilty, my Lord, I took the pups and drowned them dead.” The evidence showed that prisoner buried the six whelps in a dunghill, and the neighbors being, disturbed by their whining, asked him either to take them away, and drown them, or bury them deeper, when he replied that they would be dead within ten minutes. The yelping of the dogs continued, however, and the police were informed, the result being that four o£ them were taken out alive, after having been' buried for about five hours. Prisoner again alleged, amidst the laughter of the Court, that he tl di owned them dead before he buried them, but the heat of the dunghill had brought them alive.” The magistrates found the charge proved, and imposed a fine of 20s and 11s 6d expenses, the alternative being 20 days’ impri onment.
