The Promoters having had the very valuable property (as described below) offered to them by the Proprietor, and having made Very satisfactory arrangements for the purchase or lease of the same, they have determined to plac? the property, and the advantages connected with it, before the Public, and to develop what, in their opinion must prove to be a most successful undertaking, and one that will prove of immense advantage to the District of South Canterbury. A small amount of capital will be required to purchase the necessary machinery and to put the mine in good working order, so, that the Company will be able to pay dividends shortly after starting, l arge Lime Kilns are now in course of erection close to the property. The particulars of the properly are as follows : It is freehold, of 20 acres in extent, the property of Mr George Meredith. In the land two shafts have been sunk. The main, or working shaft is 9ft by sft u ide, and is 32ft deep, from which coal has been raised from a seain 2ft thick, The shaft is timbered from the Surface. The other shaft referred to (half- a chain from the main shaft) is 7ft by 4ft wide and 45ffc de -p, and is well timbered, and has been sunk through two seams of coal of sft and 4ft respectively on-to a 2ft Gin seam. Eire C‘lay is found ip large quantities, and is pronmneed by competent authority to be eminently adapied for pottery and sanitary p i | es, gas retorts, fire-bricks, &e. The coal is easily obtained, and is'of the ■finest quality for household and manufacturing purposes, and its superiority for the proruction of gas and for steam purposes has :een proved by reliable tests. As this coal is admitted to be areally good coal for steaming purposes, it is proposed to have constant supplies in depots, so that the public can always get what they may require. Building A-one is found on the property, and marble within a few chains, of a very superior description, also abounds. The Building Stone is a fine white stone, easily worked, and does not disintegrate from exposure to weather, some quantity of this stone having been vsed ip the' building of the Christchurch Cathedral. A lai ge quantity of good Timber is in close proximity to the ground, and easily obtain.; able. The Coal has been tried for steam purposes and found to answer admirably, as the following testimonials show.; — Timarn, Nor. 29th, 1880. To Mr George Meredith. Kakahu. Sir, —I have used the Co supplied by you from the Kakahu Mine (about five tons)- in my Mill at Timarn and found it most satisfactory, and consider the Coal well adapted to be used for steam purposes. Sir. —I have used the Coal supplied by you from your Coal Mine, K-’kahu, for my steam engine, mixing it with Newcastle Coal (half and half) I found it answe- admirably, much better than Newcastle Coal alone.
