The National Bank of New Zealand has declared a dividend of three per cent for the past half-year. Jan. 9. The 1),Ally News to-day publishes a statement to, the effect that the English Cabinet have, refused to recognise the claim, of the United, States to the political control of the projected Panama Canal, on the ground that demand is at variance with, international law and the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty.. The document strongly asserts the right of the exercise of the Imperial prerogative throughout the Empire, and insists that the oath of allegiance taken by Government officials binds them to abstain from agitation in support of the Governnxent Bit the time of Parliamentary elections,, Cairo, Jan. 8It has transpired that the French and English, Consuls-General to. the Egyptian Court have sent an identical note to the Khedive, intimating that England and France have resolved to maintain His Majesty’s authority against any re-t hellion or other disorder which may occur within his realm..
AUSTRALIAN. Melbourne, Jan. 9. There are now six cas.es of smallpox amopg the Garonnp’s passengers. One Case has reached w.hat is known as the semi-confluent stage. It ia regarded as serious, an.d likely to. end, fatally. Jaij- 10. Sailed, tlys afternoon—Union. Compaxiy’s steamship Rotomahana, for t.lie Bluff. Another of the Garonne’s passengers has paught snopllpox, and been taken to the quarantine station. The Garonne proceeded on, her voyage to Sydney today. Most of the passengers fpr New Zealand disembarked here, and will be quarantined for at least a fortnight. The action at law; brought by the crew of the steamship Ferret alias India, which was seized by the Victorian Customs authority iife April, last, for the recovery of wages alleged to be due to them, has been dismissed.
NEW ZEALAND. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, Jan, 9. At the District Court to-day, J. D. Wickham,, of the Free Lange, obtained judgment against W. L. Rees for L 54 for the recent libel action, which was dismissed. i The Good Templars have held a Conference to take steps for deciding oft united aqtion when the Licensing Districts arp proclaimed and the Licensing Act brought into force. Moderate counsels prevailed.
