EXTRAORDINARY SHOOTING CASE IN MELBOURNE.

Melbourne, litecember. 23. Last night, at 10 o'clock, a sensational shooting affray occurred in, front of a music warehouse in Swaostou street. A young woman, who gives the name of. Bourke, a new arrival from attempted to shoot a music warehouseman named Clarke Chapman, jun., with whom she had previously been on very intimate terms. The woman met Chapman in Swanston street, where he was walking with a friend, and she asked him for money, which he refused, but asked her to call at his shop later. This she did, and she repeated her demand ; but again he declined to assist her. She asked him to see her home to her lodgings, and he declined again. On this the young woman became very excited, and opening a small bag she carried, produced a revolver, at the same time seizing Chapman's arm, and fired at his head. Chapman struggled and her aim was deas the bullet merely grazed his cheek. Chapman managed to get inside again before she could repeat the fire, and slammed the door which she vainly endeavored to burst. A large crowd collected on hearing the shot, and seeing the frantic state of the girl, thought she was a lunulic, and feared to approach. She then ran off, followed by a large crowd, amongst whoa was Detectiye Mackay,who kept close to her through a number of lanes, and, after reaching Little Collins street, crept up under a wall and seized her. IShe hadji^six-chambered revolver, five charges being in it-.when caught. She told the detective, on hearing that Chapmsm was not wounded, that she had sworn to kill him before Christmas, and herself also, as Chapman had ruined her. The girl is in a very delicate state of health. Chapman admits having been intimate with her.

The woman Bourke, who shot Chapman, accuses bim of rui Jing her while in a fainting state in the Treasury Gardens. The case is causing great excitement. The woman was sent to the Lying-in hospital.
