A CCloknt. William Laurie, contractor for some protective worts now going on at Caroline Kay, near Timaru, met with an accident which resulted in his death, last Tuesday. While the work was going on, the place on which he was standing being undermined by the sea gave way, and he was precipitated down to the beach where he was covered with earth. He was removed to the hospital but died o r reaching there.

DYaENTKia' is Ashburton. —According to one of the local papers, no fewer than dea hs occurred in Ashburton on Tuesday List, through dysentery. Double Fairl b Engine, A Doub’e Fairlie steam engine passed through Terauka,from Christchurch yesterday morning en route for Dunedin. We understand that these classes of engines are running oh the Port Chalmers railway line, and are very, useful where there are many curves. The Old Opiei Bridge.—We would draw the attention of the Temuka Road Board, for its earnest consideration at Its next meeting, to the dangerous condition of the planking on the old part of, the Opihi bridge. Unless something is soon done to it or new decking laid down, in all probability some serious accident may accur. Education Board, —At the Education Board meeting held yesterday in Timaru, it was resolved “ That Mr Mclntosh head master of the Temuka School, who had met with an accident while engaged hi his own business, should pey £lO 4s 6d, the amount paid to the substitute who took charge of his school during' the three weeks that he wa ß , absent.

Accident, —A rather unusual accident happened last Monday evening. Mr Weir was returning from Timaru with an express load of passengers, when one of his horses trod upon a stone and stumbled, but did not fall. The horse was rendered so lame that it could not use its leg, and had. to come the remainder of , the journey on three legs. Mr Levens, veterinary surgeon, on examining the horse, after having come into town, found that its leg was broken.' The extraordinary featuje of the accident is, that the horse never fell, and that its leg did not come in contact with anything,' but must have snapped when the horse stumbled. The horse is rendered useless, and will probably have to he shot. Gaelic Society.— A meeting was held last Tuesday evening in the Grosvenor Hotel, Timaru, for the purpose of forming a Gaelic Society. The Chair was occupied by Dr Macdonald and there was a very large attendance, some of whom had come bn horseback a distance of, fifty miles. sft was resolved to call the society the (Gaelic Society of South Canterbury, its object being to collect funds to establish bursaries in the Otago University for the benefit of sens of Gaelic speaking parents who could afford to give them a University education. Mr Donald Maclean, of Strathconan, was elected i President, Mr D. M. Mackay, of Temuka, Vicepresident and Dr McDonald Secretary. After transacting business a very enjoyable evening was spent, and those present did not separate till, in the exuberance of their spirits, they sang “ The Bonnie Hills of Scotland" and drank to the land, pi their birth.

Board Nominations.—On Tuesday last, Messrs"’ B. A. Barker, S'. Buktou, J. Talbot, J; Austin, W, 'Walker, and J. T. M. Hayhurßt were nominated as candidates for membership on theTemuka Boad Board, to fill three vacancies thereon. ’ A poll will be taken on Tuesday next, the 10th I, instant, between the hodrs of nine.a.m. and six p.m. at the following places, viz., Road Board Office, Temuka, (principal) ; Schbolhouse. Waitohi ; Schoolhouse, Milford ; Mechnriics’ Institute, Winchester ; and the Schoolhouse, North Oravi. The official declaration of the poll will be made at the Road Board Office, Temuka, on the folk)wing day at half past twelve p.m. Messrs G. J. Denhistoun, R. Mackay, 1 arid J. Wilson having been nomimated,fpr the Mount Peel Road Board, a poll ■for the election of two of . theSe candidates, will beheld at the Road Board Office, Peel Forest, and Road Board shed, Rainoliff, tomorrow, between the hours of 9 a.m„ and 6 p.m.

' PxaEON Tournament.—Yesterday afternoon several gentlemen met in the Crown Hot.el.for the purpose of taking preliminary steps towards holding & pigeon tournament. Mr Ollivier was voted tp the chair, who after explaining the reason why the meeting was calle'd, statpd- that a subscription list had, been started with most, satisfactory results. Mr A. Fisher was appointed hon Secretary. Messrs Stening, B, Thomson, C. Nicholas, J, Ollivier, and J, Paterson were appointed a committee, with power to add to their number. It was decided to hold; the tournament on Wednesday, February 15tb, 1882, and. to obtain 500 pigeons. A liberal programme was drawn up. It‘Was; proposed; and carried, that no scouting be allowed, The secretary was authorised, to get 250 programmes printed. Resolved that the programme be advertised ia the Temuka Leader, Timaru Herald, and Lytteltoni Times, The meeting then adjourned till next Wednesday.
