Alleged Libel —According to the Timaru Herald of Thursday last, a libel vetien will most likely be entered by tlie pioprie.itu or that journal against Mr TnrnLull, one of the candidates for the .Tbuain seat, on account of certain remarks that gentleman made use of dmieg his nomination speech. The Gladstone Election. - On Thursday last, the nomination of c md'dates for the Gladstone seat in the House of Representative; look; phc’e at the Washdyko, Messrs Newton, Anderson, Dc Fisher and Captain £utier were dipy nominated. The latter, on a show of bands, olnained 13 votes. A poll was demanded by Dr Fisher. The election will lake place on the 9th instant. Oddfellows’ Sforts.— The programme ' of tlie animal sports under the auspices of the Loyal Alexandrovna Lodge of Oddfellows, to be held on Boxing Day, appears in our advertLiug co'umns. The pr’zes announced are on a most liberal scale and we trust the weather will he such, as fo enable u large, concourse of persons to assemble on the. ground to witness the proceedings. Piscatorial.— On Thursday- hist, Mr Hi-nrv and a friend, succeeded in capttiring some fine trout, one of which was tlie largest known lias, season. o;.e weighed IClbs and, although only 2ft in length, yet its girth was of considerable size. Tlie secmid; one weighed I3|lbs and another, somewhat less. They were caught in the Teinuka river, near the Schell Manse, and gave excellent sport A Hint to Candidates. -Tne D nedin Morning Herald states that Mr John Gialuun Inns hit upon a rmnarkahly cheap wsv of advertising his candidature and himself. He attends political meetings in any district with a pocketful of handbills and personally distributes ihem to those present. That cannot be beaten for economy —and for something else. The Corrupt Practicea,AGt will nut reach Mr Graham, Temuka Brass Band.—On, Thursday evening hat the band played a selection of popular airs in a section opposite the Temuka Hotel. The evening being remarkably fine, a largo concourse of people assembled in front of the section. After three hearty cheers bad been given for the band, the proceedings terminated.
