The Promoters having had the very valuable property (as described below) offered to them by the Proprietor, and having made ▼erj satisfactory arrangements for the purchase or lease of the same, they have determined to place the property, and the advantages connected with it, before the Public, and to develop what, in their opinion must prove to be a most successful undertaking, and one that will prove of immense advantage to the District of South Canterbury. A small amount of capital will be required to purchase the necessary machinery and to put the mine in good working order, so that the Company will be able to pay dividends shortly after starting. Large Lime Kilns are now in course of erection close to the property. The particulars of the property are as follows : It is freehold, of 20 acres in extent, the property of Mr George Meredith. In the land tfto shafts have been sunk. The main, or working shaft is 9ft by sft wide, and is 32ft deep, from which coal has been raised from a seam 2ft thick. The shaft is timbered from the surface. The other shaft referred to (half a chain from the main shaft) is 7ft by 4ft wide and 45ft de -p, and is well timbered, and has been through two seams of coal of sft and 4ft r -pectively on to a 2ft 6in seam. Fire s found in large quantities, and is pro- ** eil by competent authority to be 4ly aclapl ed for pottery and sanitary if® -'4 gas retorts, fire-bricks, &c. . ne coal is easily obtained, and is of the finest quality for household and manufacturing purposes, and its superiority for the production of gas and for steam purposes has ceen proved by reliable tests. As this coal is admitted to be a really good coal for steaming purposes, it is proposed to have constant supplies in depots, so that the üblic can always get what they may raquire.
