The Temuka Leader SATURDAY, JULY 2, 1881. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Acknowledgment.— We are in receipt of a batch of Parliamentary papers from the office of the (.rovernuieit Printer. Wesleyan Church. —A list of the services in connection with the Wesleyan Church in the district appears in another colun. The Liberty. —An agency has been established in this town for the sale of this widely-circulated weekly periodical. See advertisement. Vital Statistics. —The following are the vital statistics for Temuka for the month ending 30th June Jasc : —Births, 17 ; Marriages, 2 ; Deaths, 2. L.O.L.—From the July number ot the New Zealand Protestant we learn that the quarterly meeting of the No 1 District Dodge will be held in Temuka on the 15th inst., at 5 p.m. for the transaction of routine business. A Colonial Aimer.—Mr Tremayno Lark a young artist in New South Wales has been successful this year in having a picture admitted both at the Salon in Paris and at the Royal Academy, the latter being a portrait of his father. The Bible in Schools.— The result of the plebiscite taken of parents in reference to the reading of the Bible in schools is now to hand ; the total favorable to the same being 903, and against, 87. In the Temuka district 84 voted for. and 11 against. ' Wesleyan Entertainment. — An entertainment in aid of the Parsonage fund will bo given in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Wednesday next, the 6th inst. As the members of the Church are endeavoring to lesson their indebtedness it is to be hoped that their friends will come forward on this occasion and assist them in their praiseworthy effort. Another use vor Salt, —The American Builder says the accumulation of soot may be prevented by putting a quantity of salt into the mortar with which the intercourse of bricks are to be laid. Then there will never be any accumulation of soot in that chimney. The philosophy of it is is thus stated —The salt in that portion of the mortar which is exposed absorbs moisture from the atmosphere every damp day. The soot thus becoming damp, falls into the fireplace. Lady Nihilists.— Many Russian young ladies of position appear to have been beguiled into more or less complicity with the Nihilist party. The Colonial Telegraphs. —lt may interest our readers to learn, as an evidence of the progress of the Colonies, that the mileage of telegraphs in Australia exceeds that of Great Britain. At the close of the year 1880, Australia had 26,842 miles of telegraph line, and Great Britain 23,156. A • Lucky Gambling Transaction.— The most recent sensation in the play line at Menaco,writes the London World, happened to a newly married couple—a Mr and Mrs>Gooulake—-who had never been at Monle Carlo or seen gambling before. Changing a £SO note, Mr Goodlake got on a run and won £6,000, after which he returned to his hotel, packed up and started for Florence to enjoy his honeymoon at the expense of the Carlo administrators.

Accidents. —A few days ago a ch’ld aged two and a half years, of Mrs Dalton, who resides at Mr Matthews, at Milford, during the temporary absence of of its mother, fell in the fire, and on returning she found it enveloped in flames, which she succeeded in extinguishing. Dr Campbell was called in who, on examination, found the child severely burnt ou the left side. At the present time it is progressing favorably, We hear also that a child of Mr Edgier, at Sod Town, has been severely burnt through falling agairst the fire, and scalding in the face, owing to a billy containing hot water upsetting over the unfortunate child’s face. In this instance also the child is doing as well as could be expected.

Loyal Independent Order op Oddfellows.—Tlie usual half-yearly meeting of the above Lodge was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Temuka, on Wednesday evening last, when the election of officers for the ensuing term took place, with the following result :—N.G., Bro. H. Dunford ; V. G., Bro. W. Hooper; Bro. W R. Uprichard (re-elected) ; Treasurer, Bro. J. Whitehead (re-elected). Two honorary members and one ordinary member were proposed for initiation. Several of the members of the Lodge resolved to have some slight refreshments after the installation of officers nezt Lodge night, a Committee being appointed to carry out the same. The meeting then closed.

T.M.I.A.—The usual weekly meeting of the Temuka Mutual Improvement Association was held in the Good Templars’ Hall on Thursday evening last, there being a good attendance of members. The Rev. T. Tee occupied the chair. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and confirmed. Mr Bolton opened the debate in the negative on the question, “Is free education necessary in Now Zealand 1 ” Messrs Ilayhnrst and Gray spoke on the negative s'de, and Messrs J. Brown, Mendelson, and Diddams in the affirmative. At the conclusion of the debate, the negative, on the question being put to vhe vote, won by a majority of three. Mr Gee was elected a member, and Mr Tombs proposed for admission. The proceedings tormina ed with the usual vote of thanks to the chair.
