TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A special meeting of the above Committee was held last evening for the purpose of nominating two members for the Board of Education in the stead of Messrs Postleihwaite and Lovegrove, resigned, ■» RES ENT. Messrs Mackay (Chairman), Gray, J. Brown, J. Meodelson, Watt, and Bussell. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A memorandum was read from the South Canterbury Board of Education intimating th at Messrs Posth-thwaife and Lovegrove bad resigned as members of tlie Board, and that nominations must be sent in not later than sth July next. From the Waimate School Committee intimating that Mr W. J. Steward was a candidate for one of the seats and asking for the support of the Temuka School Committee. From Mr Balfon-, also a candidate fo r one of the seals, stating hia views on educational matters in general. Mr Mendelson proposed— “ Tiiat Messrs Slack and Steward be nominated as candidates for the vacant seats, and that the Chairman write asking their consent.” motion was carried. . From the Secretary of St. Saviour’s School, asking for the use of th e schoolroom for a tea and entertainment on Friday, 14th instant, commencing at six p.m. The request was granted, on condition that arrangements be made for clearing up afterwards. From Mr T. Davis, agreeing to remove nightsoil, etc, from the Temuka school premises at 3s 6d per week. Circular from the Board of Education showing the result of Pupil Teachers’ examination.
From the head teacher, reporting that for the mouth ending 20th June the numbers on the roll were—boys, 192 ; giq 3i 182. Total 374. Average daily attendance— 119.6 ; girls, J9c'.5.—218.1. Highest number present, June 2nd, boys 125 ; giils, 112. Total 137Messrs Mackay and Bussell, visitors for the current month reported the working as satisfactory, with the exception of the infant department, where they were too closely packed. Resolved—“ That the Secretary to the Board of Education be requested to fur nish the Committee with information respecting the duties of the teachers and particularly with respect to the time to be devoted to the instruction of pupil teachers by the headmasters.
Resolved—“ That in future the head teacher be requested to report to the Chairman of the Committee when he or apy of his staff are prevented from atk tending to their duties, from sickness or * otherwise, so that an effort may be made to supply their places, to prevent the efficiency of the school being interfered with.”
From tbe Education Department, Wellington, intimating that in future all capitation grants for children under five years of age would be done away with. Resolved -“That the head master’s attention he drawn to the above.” Resolve u That the Chairman, and Messrs Mend el son and Brown be appointed a deputation to tbe Education Board, to confer re school accommodation and other matters relating to the welfare school.”
From the South Canterbury Bible in Schools Association in reference to leading the Bible in Schools. Resolved—“ That this Committee concur with the Bible in Schools Association for the action taken by them to obtain the minds of the parents with respect to reading the Bible in schools. ’’ The customary vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
