CHRISTCHURCH CATHEDRAL BELLS.
The following appears in the Nottingham Journal of April lGth :—Messrs Taylor and Co., of Loughborough, have just completed a splendid peal of ten bells for Ohristchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. The total weight of the ten bells is 137 cwt Oqr 241 b, the weight of each one being as follows -—Treble (F sharp), 6cwt Oqr 61b ; 2nd (E), 6cwt 2qr 2ib ; 3rd (D), 7cwt lqr 14!b ; 4th (C s':arp), 7cwt 3qr 71b ; slh (B), 9cwt 2qr 141 b ; Cth (A), llcwt 3qr 211 b ; 7th i (G), 15cwt Oqr 01b ; Bth (F sharp), 17cwt i Iqr 21b; 9th (E), 23cwt 2qr 01b; tenor. (D), 32cwt 2qr 01b. On each bell the name of the founders (Messrs Taylor and Co.) is cast. The peal was originally intended to consist of eight bells, but the following inscription on the two sn.allest show that they were afterwards added : We two little bells to complete the chime Were nearly left out too late, When Miles to the rescue, but just in tiar.e, Added us on to the eight. On the large tenor bells is cast the following lines : Thro' all the roads or life, the best, We'll strive to be your guide, And let our notes do your behest By tolling far and wide, We've crossed the seas to this fair land, To do God all the honor. From clime to clime Ave'll ring our chime, Aad tell of Rhodes, the donor. The bells are sent out with massive oak framework and all the fittings complete, including Ellacombe's chiming apparatus. They have been tested several times while at the foundry, and their rich tones could be heard at a considerable distance,
