TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
An ordinary meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday last; MEMBERS PRESENT. f Present— Messrs, Talbot (chajrman), Barker, Ensor, and. Empson. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. DEPUTATIONS. Mr Dickinson interviewed the Eoard in reference to clearing the creek hear Mr Breakwell'B. He stated that the work had been let for 3s pei chain and asked the Bonrd to pay half that sum as. the Board had done on a previous occasion. The surveyor was instructed to examine the work and report at next meeting. MrMeason C.E. waited on the Board and made certain suggestions relative to the Opihi [bridge, which the Board approved of. He also-handed in his report which showed that the work' was being done in a satisfactory manner and would probably be completed in about two , months from date. He also gave a cer- . fcificate for £1673 6s 7d as progress payment. , The Board requested Mr Meason to . examine the piles of the old bridge and report at next meetf ng. Messrs Stewart and Bissett interviewed the Board and asked for the formation 6f Stewart's road to be continued to the river ; also for a few. chains on the same road on the north side of the river. ,The Surveyor was instructed to report at next meeting. Mr Job Brown requested that Cassstreet might be formed from the South road to Davie-street. The ; Board directed that tenders Bhould be called for same. Mr J. Brown complained that part of his fence had been buried by formation o£ footpath in Dyson-street. The Surveyor was instructed to have the same put right. An application was received for repairing a culvert near t lie Bangitata. The Surveyor was i Detracted to have the work done. The same party also recommended planting a piece uf land on Badham's road, supposed to be a reserve.
The Surveyor was instructed to ascertain whether th« said land is a reserve or not, and if it is to take steps to have it planted. Messrs Young, Pearce, and others stated that part of the Opihi riverbed, opposite Pearce's road had lately been bought, which cut off all access to the riverbed for a considerable distance. Mr Pearce also handed in a letter from the Chief Surveyor upon theijubject, explaining the necessary steps to betaken to procure a road through the said land. The Clerk wa3 instructed to reply to the said letter, and urge the opening out of the road. .^ The asked for the formation of pjart of the road in the riverbed betweeh£Pearde's and Shepherd's cutting. The Surveyor was instructed to report upon the Eame at the next meeting. Mr Horgan applied for a surfaceman to be kept filling in ruts on the Upper Swamp road during the time the applicant is shingling Paterson's road. i The matter was refered to- the Surveyor. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered : From Mr Paterson, stating that he was unable to attend the meeting that day. From Mr Lawson, asking for a redu - tion in the rent of the Pound. The Surveyor was instructed to examine the Pound Book and report at next meeting. Mr Lawson also enclosed the sum of £2l 12s, for rent of Pound and sale of horse. From Mr Thomas Dunn, asking for Mr S. D Barker's name to be entered on the Rate Roll for section 6024. The Clerk was instructed to communicate with Mr Barker on the subject. From Messrs O'Connor and Prindiville, asking for compensation for shingling contract, Waitohi road, it being a longer length than the supposed distance nan.ed in the specifications. Resolved—''That the Board cannot accede to the request as the specification provides for the work to be done to a certain point, the distance given not being iDtended to be exact. From Mrßlnley, asking to be allowed to form a path near his house, also for timber for a small bridge. The same wat referred to the surveyor. The consideration of making a reduction in surlaee men's wages was deferred till next meeting. From Messrs Henderson and Ackroyd asking for drain on Middle Swamp road to be deepened. RjMferer to the Surveyor. FromlTimaru Harbor Board enclosing copy of resolution passed on sth May re endowment. Resolved —" That this Board are in favor of an endowment beiog made as proposed and heartily co-operate in the movement. From Geraldiue County Council stating that £4OOO had been lodged to the Board's credit re Opihi Bridge account, From the Postal and Telegraph Department, stating that the name of Woodbridge would be altered to that of Rangitata from the Ist June. From the Engineer's department te road through railwiiy reserve rented by Mr Storey. From Mr Cross re renting reserve on Opihi river bed. The same was approved of, From Public Works Office re railway reserve rented by Mr Storey. The Surveyor to forward tracing and copy of letter dated Feb 28. A post-card was received in reference to Mr Fletcher's insolvency. From Mr McCarthy, offering to work for the Board. From Mr Mulloy, upon the same subject. From Mr J. N. Wood, R.M., jeMr Woolicombe's expenses attending Assessment Court, amounting to £1 Is. Besolved—"That the same be paid." From Mr Kerr, in reference *o the Lyttelton Times account. The Clerk wns instructed to inform Mr Kerr that the same had been paid. From Mr Anderson, re supplying nightsoil cart. Offer declined. From the Bank of New Zealand, acknowledging receipt 'of £4OOO on the Opihi Bridge account. From Mr Inwood re fencing at Winchester. The Surveyor reported that the work had been done. From Mr Craig, in reference to a night soil cart. Resolved—•' That the offer of Mr Craig be accepted." LEVYING A RATE. The rate book was laid before the Board and a rate of sixpence in the £ was made and ordered to be levied and the clerk i instructed to proceed with the collection I as soon as possible. " WAIXINGFORD DRAINAGE. The Surveyor laid before the Board a rough plan of the proposed drain through Wallingford, showing levels etc., together with the approximate cost of same. The Board expressed their approval of same, but considered it a in advance of the f resent requirements of the town and that they would not be justified in carrying it out unless by levying a special rate.
THE IMMIGRATION COTTAGES. Proposed by Mr Barker, s conded by Mr Empson and carried—" Tii;ii Mr Rollestion be written to, pointing out the- uselessness of the Immigration cottages, viz. four at Temuka and two at Winchester ; that they are oftentimes without tenants, and are then a harbor for unendurable characters. The Board suggest that they be sold either with or without the land." ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £2244 2a 7d and deposit accounts, £l7 9s, making a total of £2261 lis 7d having been passed for payment the meeting terminated.
