A STRANGE PRESENT TO THE HOME SECRETARY.
Recently a box, about twelve inches square, similar to those used by haberdashers, and bearing the Manchester postmark, arrived at the House of Commons, addressed to the Home Secretary. The appearance of the box exciting some suspicion, Sir W. Harcourt placed it in the hands of Inspector Denning, who thereupon sent for the Chief Commissioner of Jjgtice and Superintendent in whose presence it was opened, and found to contain a pistol about nine inches long, and loaded nearly to the muzzle. Fearing that the contents might he of more than ordinarily dangerous character the officers deferred a closer examination of the weapon. In the box was also enclosed a piece of paper, upon which was written a statement that the pistol was a "first instalment of ths Arm 8 Act by an admirer" of the right hon. gentleman to whom it was sent. The Central News says that a horrible rumor ran round the House of Commons yesterday afternoon that an infernal machine had been discovered under the Speaker's chnir. It turned out that a rusty pistol, charged with " something," had been sent to the Home Secretary.
