ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, May 23. Among the- na3(ies of the gentlemen recently created Companions of the Order of St. Michael and St. George is that of Mr W. A. Duncan, Collector ol Customs, Sydney. At the wool sales to day, 11,400 bales wove offered, making a total of 105,100 bales catalogued since the opening. Less demand was experienced and prices were occasionally easier. May 24.
Theie is do foundation for the rumor recently circulated that the Bey of Tunis has been deposed by the Sultan.
Further information has been received by the Admiralty with regard to the blowing up of H.M.S. Dotterell in Magellan Straits on the 20th April. The survivors state that two explosions occurred, both about the same lime, 10 o’clock in the morning, while the vessel was at anchor. They are, however, unable to throw any light upon the cause of the terrible disaster.
At the wool sale to-day 9100 bales were offered. The tone of the bidding was strong. News has been received from Canada that a terrible accident has occurred near London, on the Thames, in the province ot Ontario. An excursion steamer with several hundred persons on board capsized, and one hundred and seventy-five perished. Adelaide wheat ex warehouse, is quoted' a.t 48 s ; New Zealand wheat, 445; Adelaide fipur, 33s 6d ; Australian tallow, best heef,. 34s 6d ; best mutton, 36s 6d.
At the wool sales, fo--day ton thousand bales were offered. The market is firm. The agricultural statistics of SouthAustralia, published to-day, show that the area under cultivation is 1,734,000*. acres, being an increase of 275,0t>0 acres compared with last year, Theyield during .the past season has been 8.606,000, bushels, being a decrease of 5,640,000 compared with the season of' 1880. This year’s average has been 4. bushels 58lbs per acre, against 9 bushels. 47lbs last year. The race for the Adelaide Birthday Cup was run to-day, and resulted in & victory for Mata by two lengths, Pro-* gress second, and Crystal third. Theother starters were Savanaka,Suwarrow, Odd Trick, The Yagabond, Lothair, Pawnbroker, Rothschild,. Venus, President, and Rifleman. The course was. very slippery owing to recent rains.
