QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY IN TEMUKA.

Tuesday last being the anniversary of Her Majesty's Birthday was most loyally observed in Temuka, the offices and stores —with one or- two" exceptions—being closed, and flags were fluttering in the breeze from the. hotels. Everyone seemed on pleasure bent, and the early train from Tiuiatu conveyed a goodly number to that place, en route for the racecourse, where the New Zealand <3rand National Steeplechase Club held a very successful meeting. During the day several pleasure parties arrived heie; from Timaru —some, perchance, on visits to their friends —thus testifying to the fact that the district has its rural attractions, especially to those who are for many months at a stretch penned up —on business intent — in Timaru, thus affording pleasurable relaxation from the cares of a city life. But the great event of the day fell to the lot of the Volunteers. VOLUNTEER INSPECTION. Shortly before 9 am. the bugle sounded the assembly, and the No. 1 Temuka Rifle Volunteers mustered at the Volunteer Hall for inspection by Lieut.-Colonel Paoke, who complimented the men on their efficiency, and stated that he was glad to see so large a number present (thirty-three,- besides the Drum and Fife Band, captain, liautenant, and four sergeants.) He was much gratified on observing the arms and accoutrements in siich good order. THE PRIZE FIRING. At the conclusion of the Inspection Parade the Volunteers marched to the butts for the purpose of firing for prizes given by residents in the township. They were under command of Lieut.-Cdl'ohel ' Packe and Captain- Young. The drum and fife band: played selection* of music in a very creditable manner whilst on the route. On arrival on the ground": the firing commenced,: Gaptam Young acting as official scorer, and Corporal Uprichard and Prfvate Currie as marker's, the ranges bein.j under the superintendence of Lieut. Findlay. The day was" all that could be desired for the purpose a"nd there was a goodly number of spectators present. We fancy that if monthly competitions—for, say a badge—<vere held, better averages- might be looked for. Refreshments- were gratuitously supplied OB the ground to the Volunteers by Mrs L. Tombs, Mr' E. tee, Mr Franks,, and others. The following is the result of the day's competition :

The highest scorer in efeli range had a special prize beside the|p ; own. A few, prizes ivere kept back for the youthful, members of the l)rura ; and Fife Band, to be contested for at a future time;

vt r e learn that Corporal Smith took r plough, Private Clinch, electro-platsd tea and coffse pot and one sheep, Private B. Smith, revolving electro-plated butter cooler ; Sergeant Brewer, a handsome clock and set of table legs, Sergeant Hobbs an electro-plated cruet stand ; Private Burrows, a pair of latdies' boots, and Sergeant Smith, a pair of gent'sboots. The firing was concluded between 4 and five p m, when the Company, after inarching through the main street, returned to the Volunteer Ball and dismissed by Lieut.-Colonel Packe. THE BALL. la the evening the annual Ball was held in the Volunteer Hall, there being about fifty couples present. It wa? under the immediate patronage- of Lieut Colonel Packe, Captain Sottrig and officers of the Cd.npuny,, Lieut \Vardle and other officers of the C:- Battery Volunteers' Timaru. The musical arrangements were all that could be desire'd and we were informed . that there had not been a better band playing on any similar occasion in Temuka It was under the direction of Mr Stratton who played on the' violin> Mr Dickinson cornet, and Corporal Levens presided at the piano, color Sergeant Coira acted as

M.C. The prizes competed for at the firing were, during an interval, distributed to their respective winners by Miss Young f daughter of the Captain ot the Sompany. Dancing was kept op wit*h considerable spirit till about four o'clock yesterday morning when the party broke up well pleased with such a successful termination of the day's proceedings. Mr L: Tbmbf provided' the refreshments in his usual excellent style.
