Temuka Road Board,—The usua monthly meeting of this Board will take place to-day.
A Costly (Show.—The final netfc cost of llio Melbourne Exhibition is now set down at a qnarter of a million. Defekred Payment.—ln Victoria there are uo less than 10,700 settlers who are behindhand with their payments.
Maintenance of Water-Races.—lt is proposed to introduce a Bill into Parliament next session providing means for the maintenance of water-racos.
Vital Statistics.—The following are the vital statistics for the district of Temuka for the month ended April 30th last:—Births, 11 ; Marriages, 1; Deaths 4. Cattle. Trespass.—There was quite a field day yesterday at the R.M. Court, several persons being fined for allowing their cattle to wander at large in the streets.
Licensing Court. —The quarterly sitting of the Licensing Commissioners for the district of Temuka, will be held in the Court-house, on Tuesday, 7th June next, at noon.
Another Industrial Exhibit] on. An Industrial Exhibition will shortly be held in Dunedin. It will doubtless be a very successful one as the applications for space received have already exceeded expectations.
Termination of the Cape War.—A telegram from Capetown, dated Saturday last, states that news had been received from Basutoland. that the mediation of Sir Hercules Robinson, with a view to bring about a settlement of the difficulties in that country had been successful. The Basuto chiefs have now agreed to the proposals for peace which were submitted by His. Excellency, and hostilities between the Cape forces and. the Basutoa have now finally ceased.
' Winchester School Committee —The usual monthly meeting of the Committee will be held on Wednesday evening next. Attempted Suicide. —A man named Michael Quirk stabbed himself in the abdomen in the Timaru Park to-day, and is not expected to reeover. More Libel. -It is rmnorod that Mr I. N. Watt, 8.M., intends commencing an action for libel against the Oamtnu Mail, grounded npon a sub-leader which that journal published a few weeks ago.
Praiseworthy Enterprise. Messrs Austin, Kirk and Co., of Christchurch, have signified their intention to tho Government to establish a claim to the bonus of £250 for the first £IOOO worth of household pottery made and sold within given dates. The Government has acknowledged the notification. T. and G. A. and P. Association.— The members of this Association are reminded that a moeting will be held this evening in the Star Hotel, at half-past seven, for the purpose of signing the petition for bringing tho Society under "The Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Act, 1877," and other business, of importance . Wrestling.—A match for £IOO a-side took place in Messrs Lea and Whitley's saloon, Timaru, on Saturday last, between Mr Hudson, of Dunediii, and Mr Slade, of Temuka. Neither of them had, trained for the event. Tho arrangement was that the best five falls out of nine should decide tho contest. Slade ultimately became the winner, throwing his antagonist six times out of tho nine. Retaliation Extraordinary The following paragraph appears in Messrs J. R. Parkinson and Co.'s wine and spirit report: —" The energetic steps taken by the French Government with regard to the importation of pork from America has, we understand, met with unexpected retaliation from the United States Government, in the form of a Tecree prohibiting tho entry of all French wines on the plea that they are " unwholesome."
Rich Gold Specimens.—Som9 -wonderfully r?ch specimens of quartz have been brought iuto Naseby from a recently discovered reef in the locality of the Rough Ridge. One of the specimens consists of stone one-third of gold. They are the best specimens ever seen in Naseby. Probably, says a recent telegram, none better have been Been in Oiago.
The Wooden Walls of Old England. —The man-of-war Pyraraus, captured by Nelson from the Danes in 1801, was sold not long ago in Halifax, IN.S. She had served for some time as a trainingship, and was not reported as ac all unseaworthy. The ship which brought Gen. Wolfe to Canada in 1758 is said to be still in acLiv3 service, and it is only a few years ago that the vessel which brought over the Prince of Orange, afterwards William 111. in 1868, was broken up.
The Steamship India. —A Melbourne telegram states that Wallace, the pnrser of the steamer India, has been arrested at Wodonga, and Wright, the captain, was arrested last night in Melbourne while in a state of intoxication. When her owner was arrested, arms, and a log-book criminating the vessel, were found in his possession. Six hundred and twenty-six sovereigns and bills to value of £7500 were found, by the police at the hotel where the owner of the India was slopping, at the time of his arrest.
Wreck in Timaru Harbor.—Oa Sunday morning last the schooner Amaranth drifted considerably, and her cable snapping at 10 o'clock, she fouled the brigantine Circe, carried away the dolphinstriker, and started her chain plates. On getting free the schooner was abandoned, her crew going aboard the Circe. Site gradually neared the shore, striking the beach to the north of the Washdyke Lagoon, where she became a total wreck. She was owned by Messrs Guthrie and Larnach, and had 79 tons coal in her for the Brunner Coal Company, Timaru.
