MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.

On Friday night last, the usual monthly meeting of the Committee of the Mechanics' Institute was held in the Beading Room. PRESENT. The following members of Committee were present:—Dr Hayes (President), in the chair ,Gray, Mendelson, McKay, Blyth Lee, Elliott, and Geutlemun. MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT. The Librarian presented his report, to the effect that the books leot by the lustitute to that at Geraldine had been returned, but some were in a dilapidated state. The new books obtained from Mr P. W. Hutton, Timaru, had given great satisfaction to the subscribers. The report as read wad received and adopted. SUBSCRIPTIONS RECEIVED. The Librarian handed in the sum of £5 5s 6d, amount received, for subserip-. tiona during the past month. CORRESPONDENCE. The f01i0.,-ing correspondence was. read and considered: — From Mr Bateman, in refereijpe to The Colppist

Resolved—" That the Colonist be taken at the price offered, viz., 10s." ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £8 12s were passed for payment. Amongst these was an item of £1 due for rental of the Volunteer Hall, for a lecture delivered by Mr Armstrong. The account caused considerable discussion, on the ground that it was excessive, as the lecture was given for the benefit of the public The Hall had been erected by public, subscriptions, and ought, therefore, to be let for local purposes at a price that would pay for lighting and cleaning the Hall, MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS. Several suggestions entered in a book, kept for recording same, were replied to. The President was authorised to, procure some coat and hat hooks, and have them put up in a convenient part of the Institute. President intimated that he had received, no further information in regard to the books ordered, from England. It was resolved—" That the President, Vice-President, and Treasurer form a Committee, having the ?power to cancel the ord;er given to Messrs Bell and Bradfute, if the books were not to hand by the next mail. The meeting then terminated.
