TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting’of the Board was held on Tuesday, sth April, 1881. PRESENT. Present Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Barker, Empsou, and Patterson, MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. DEPUTATION. Mr Meason had an interview with the Board, with reference to certain matters connected with the Opihi Bridge, The engineer’s recommendations, were agreed to. Messrs Gray, Hooper, Blyth, Mackay and Uprichard attended to ask the Board to have the concrete kerhing carried past the Presbyterian Church, also to have two lamps erected for the convenience of persons going to and from the Railway Station, one at the corner of Commerce street near old Leader office, and the other at the corner near the Presbyterian Church. The both requests were granted. Mr T. Palmer interviewed the Board and produced a petition numerously signed in favor of the Board endeavoring to obtain the sanction _o£ the Railway Authorities to convert the bridge lately built across the Temuka River on the Oxford and Temuka line into a dray bridge. It was resolved —“That the Minister of Public Wm’ks be written to, stating that a requisition had been sent to the Board Risking chat the Temuka-Oxford Railway ’bridge be converted into a traffic bridge, the Board would ask if the Government would be willing to allow the conversion and to be used for that purpose.” Messrs Hayhurst and Copostuke attended, in support of a petition asking that Alexandra street be formed from Railway gate to Wilkin-street. Granted, Surveyor to call for tenders. They also inquired what steps had been taken with reference to a previous re quisition, to have a Road carried through the land now occupied by Mr C- Storey. The Clerk stated that a communication with tracing of the site had been forwarded to the Minister of Public Works, but that no reply had been yet received. Mr Ollivicr attended asl a deputation from the Fire Brigade, to request the Board to, render them some assistance to put down a few stand pipes for the town. The Board, resolved that they would favorably consider the application for assistance provided the townspeople first demonstrated its practicability. OPIHI BRIDGE. It was resolved. —“ That the Clerk prepare a statement of all monies paid on account of this bridge up to date and to supply the County Council with a copy,” The Chairman : was requested to interview the Council on the subject of finance. Resolved —“ That the Clerk write to the Chairman of Levels Road Board and inform him that in consequence of, the works going on at the Opihi Biidge the road on the south approach is stopped and request that their Overseer be instructed to have a new approach made on the south side for the convenience of the public. Mr Barker pronosed, Mr Empson seconded and it was carried —“ That tenders he called for fencing- Reserves Nos 10046, 1071, 1070, 819, 1058, and 1068, and also for planting them with forest trees, naming sorts.’ CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read From Mr Bolton, asking that the Board would re-consider their decision with reference to dispensing with his service as rate collector. It was resolved—“ That Mr Bolton be informed that his tender for rate collecting applied only to the rate then to be collected—he will receive due notice as to arrangements made for the ensuing years rates.” From the Engineer in charge of the Opihi Bridge, containing a report of the works and certificate for progress payment to the contractors. From Mr Joseph Ailott, complaining of the crossing over the Waihi Creek, on Smithficld road. The Surveyor was instructed to see to the matter, and have a plank placed. From Mr E. Brown, and twelve others, re erecting lamps. From Mr O. P. McCallum, complaining that the old culvert near Down’s place was broken, and asking for timber or pipes to make a new one. The Surveyor was instructed to inspect the place and give pipes or timber, if necessary. From Mr W. Henderson, asking for timber to make a crossing oyer ditch, Lower Swamp Road. ■ Ordered to be dealt with in the same manner as the foiraer.
From Mr W. Deßenzy, complaining of a dangerous hole in the road near his place. Ordered to be filled up in the best and most economical manner possible. From Mr T. Bullock, Ashburton, asking to, be supplied with a lithographed map of the district. The Clerk, was instructed, to send him one. From Mr Klee, asking permission toerect a verandah to his house at Winchester.
The request was granted, under the supervision of the Board’s Surveyor. From the Clerk to the Geraldine County Council, asking to be supplied with any alterations made by the Assessment Court to the Valuation Roll. Ordered to be done. From Mr Henry Hullen, asking that a road near his place be made passable. The Surveyor was instructed to inspect the place and report. From Mr Tripp, asking that the road through the Smithfield estate be formed.
Resolved—“ That the Board cannot do anything, the road in question being only half a chain wide and not a public road.” From the Manawatu County Council, asking the Board to co-operate with them in influencing Members of Parliament to agitate for assisting local bodies with endowments, etc., Mr Barker proposed, Mr Empson seconded, and it was carried —“That as this Board do not deem it advisable under the present condition of the country to agitate for a renewal of the payment of subsidies to local bodies, they must decline to co-operate with the Manawatu County Council, although many of the propositions meet with their approval. ’ From the Public Works Office, asking what had been done, or is intended to be done with reference to utilising the Oxford and Temuka railway bridge for a foot bridge. The Clerk was ordered to reply that no steps had as yet been taken in that direction. TENDERS. The following tenders -were accepted: — No. s—Stone Breaking, Rolleston Road —T. Kane, £l7. No. 6—Stone Picking, Sorith Road — Hansen and Ewing, £2 10s. No. 7 —Bridge, etc., Marshall’s Road — G. Connihan, £57. No. B—Formingß—Forming and Shingling, Paterson’s Road —J. Horgan : formation, 4s per chain ; claying, Is 4d per yard ; shingling, Is 7£d per yard. No. 9—Too high. Fresh tenders to be in by Tuesday, 12th inst. No. 10—High street Formation—J. B. Connor, £l6 15s 6d. No. 11—Shingling Waitolii Road— O’Connor and Prindiville, 9jd per yard. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £726 3s 8d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
