GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held at their officeson Tuesday last. PRESENT. Mr C. G. Tripp, in the chair, Messrs J. Meudelson, A. Wilson, G. F. Clulee,. T. Hardcastle, and E. Acton. The Chairman explained that the special meeting bad been convened in ’ consequence of an expression of opinion by the ratepayers to the effect that the entrusting of business to sub-committees , instead of transacting such matters at , the ordinary monthly meetings was objectionable. Mr Acton after a lew remarks proposed ; “ That the resolution passed on February Bth, fixing quarterly instead of monthly meetings be reresolution and it was carried. rangitata bbidge. Mr Meudelson said that if dependence could be placed upon the Mount Peel Road Board, giving LIOOO and LSOO from the Geraldine-Board, no doubt the County woutd give its j proportion..

and addressed to the Chairman of the Ashburton County Council, as follows : —“ With reference to the correspondence 'hat has taken place relative to the works .amnected with the extension of the . Pangitata road bridge, I am now to inform you that the ciremnunder which the ~nvas n quested to undertake the work having no longer any existence, it is thought-probable the County may wish to resume The Ashburton County Council requested the Government to take in hand the construction of the work at a time when, owing to the County’s Act not being in full operation in the adjoining County of Geraldine, a moiety of the expenditure could not be recovered therefrom. A.-, however, the County’s Act lias been now brought into full fore ’in the County of Geraldine the Government think it probable the County of Ashburton may desire to resume the control of the work, and will be obliged by your informing them of your wishes in. the matter.” The Chairman informed the members that he had eaused the telegram to be forwarded to the Chairman, of the Ashburton County Council “I am directed by the Geraldine County Council to state that the resolution of Februaryßtb, accepting the responsibility re the Kangitata bridge, can only be relied on if the plans are submitted to and approved by this Council.” Mr Clulee took exception to the course pursued, and did not .think the Ashburton County Council had been treated fairly. Several members then spoke in regard to the legal obligation of the Council to contributetheir share towardsthe expense of the erection of the bridge, Mr A. Wilson proposed, Mr Thos. Hard castle seconded, and it was carried,.That the following members of tin’s Council be a Committee to confer withthe Ashburton Council regarding the extension of the Rangitata bridge, viz., the Chairman, Mr Mendelson and Mr Clnlee.” It was further agreed that the Secretary should write to the Chairman of the -•' sliburton County Council and request a convenient time to be appointed for the reception of such Committee. The following copy of a resolution which had been passed by the Mount j Peel Road Board and forwarded to the j Council was read —“ That the Mount j Peel Road Board give LIOOO towards the i extension cf the Rangitata bridge, as the Geraldine Road Board has promised NLSOO provided the bridge in carried out n the cylinder system, and that they re in favor of the rate bemg struck by he County of Geraldine to cover thestra expense.” WOODBEIDGB RAILWAY STATION. Y Th'g* Mount Peel Road Board wrote • to request the support of the Council in protesting against the alteration of the nerae of The railway station on the south side of the Rangitafa river, from Rangitata South to Wood bridge. There are other names in the district nearly corresponding, namely, Woodsicle, Woodbury, Woodend, <fec., which would certainly lead to mistakes, with inconvenience, and the change has caused just dissatisfaction throughout the district. The Chairman said he had met and gpoken to the Premier about the matter, and he (the Premier) had said he failed to recognise how any objection could be made to the alteration. Mr E. Acton moved—“ That the clerk be requested to write to the PostmasterGeneral, expressing the opinion of this Council that the proposed change in the name of South Rangitata to Woodbridge oris undesirable, and from the prior existence of similar names in the same neighbourhood is sure to cause eror and delay, and that it would therefore be wise to retain the previous name.” Mr J. Mendelson seconded the motion and it was carried unanimously. R. M. COURT FEES. Mr Mendelson said there was a matter which had come under his notice which was worthy of consideration. Certain of the fees which were paid into the Resident Magistrate’s Court they were entitled to receive, but owing to these particulars fees being paid in stamps, they did not always receive the money. A Committee was appointed to enquire into and report on the - subject at the next meeting of the C ouncil. SLAUGHTERHOUSE AT TEMUKA. ' Attention having i*cu Jv&.t-v, fn f!u> close proximity of a slaughterhouse and boiling-down establishment to the township of Temukn, Mr Acton moved, Mr Hardcastle seconded, and it was carried •< That Messrs Wilson and Menceleon be requested to visit the premises of Mr B. Thomson, near Terouka, and that the Inspector of Slaughterhouses be requested to attend and act’ in accordance with instructions to be issued by Messrs Wilson and Mendelson.” Subsidies. A circular was read from the Mana-wat-u County Council, asking the cooperation of the Council in bringing its influence to bear on the members representing their various districts in Far- ( Lament, or on candidates offering themselves for election on the next general election, to urge upon them the .advisableness and necessity to compel any Government who may be in power to assist the local bodies by continuing the subsidies to County Councils. OPIHI BRIDGE. In reference to the Opihi bridge, the Counc 1 decided to leave the lull control in the hands c i the Temuka Road Board. The Chairman stated that that Board had accepted the tender of Messrs Thomson and Hill for the erection of the bridge at L 5211 10s 6d. RESERVES. A communication was read from the Government, intimating that an early opportunity would be taken to consider the of a number of reserves to *7 -O the Council. ACCOUNTS. After several accounts had been pa c sed for payment the Council adjourned.
