THE PROPOSED TOWN CLOCK.

Toe Rev. Father Fauvel wrote some live months ago to Messrs Dent and Co., Clockmakers, of London, for full informa, lion as to price, size, &c , of a clock suitable for a town, ami received the following letter hy the last English mail, which he'.as kindly placed at our disposal, it will be observed that the letter only refers t u three dials, but we are creditably informed the cost of a fourth would not be much. It will also bo seen that the price (£118) for the one mentioned is much less than that mentioned in our article last week : G 1 Stiand, W.C., 2,‘srd Dec. 1880. '• Sir, —The price of a tower clock of the best construction, to go 8 days with one winding, to have three dials —eich 4 feet in diameter—to strike the hours upon a bi ll of 1050 lb., and the xour quarters upon two bells, including everything but the bells, and packed in tin for transmission to New Zealand, would be one hundred and eighteen pounds (£118). The construction of the clock would be as described in the accompanying list, and you will, after a little regulation, bo able to depend upon its keeping time to within three to five seconds a week. The distance at which the striking will bo hoard will vary with the direction and force of the wind, but under favorable circumstances it will be heard at a distance of three miles. It would be better to arrange, if possible, for a deeper pull for the weights, still, if that cainot be done, with an extra pulley it can be made to go for three weeks. We send you a photograph which, though not the same, resembles very nearly the clock wo should send ymi There will he no difficulty in fitting it up, as we will send full directions. “We are, Sir, “Yours very obediently, “ G. Dent & Co. “ Lists sent by book post herewith.'’
