1 f ./ PRESENT. T Messrs Wilson (Chairman), Hooper, Storey, Russell, Harrop, Brown, and Gray,
MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and duly confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and confirmed viz : From the Board of Education stating that in view of alteration in the teaching staff, the Board does not consider it desirable to make further appointments until the Committee have had an opportunity of revising the stafifat theTemuka School, in accordance with the Dew scale.
From same asking the Committee to nominate two persons for the Board of Education.
From same enclosing specimen of label for prize, the same to be had on application to the office of the Board. From same enclosing regulations of Police Department for enforcement of compulsory clause of the Education Act, 1877, also form of summons. Prom same enclosing'the new Regulation for the employment of teachers. Prom same advising that the sum of L 55 10s Bdhad been paid into the Bank of New Zealand, for teachers’ salaries for the month ending Dec 31st ; also showing the amount payable to the Head Master for instructing pupil teachers. Prom same stating that the annual puoil teachers examination will bo held at the Public Schcol, Timaru, on Monday Tuesday, and Wednesday, 24th, 25th, and 26th January, 1881 respectively, commencing on Monday at 2 o clock p,m. The Head Master reported as follows; I have the bono^^cporHoMnonth
ending 31st Lee. 1880 :—No. on Roll — Boys 183, girls 179 ; total 362, Average daily attendance —Boys 124, girls 116 ; total 146. Highest number present, Dec. 6—Boys 144, girls 139 ; total 283. The following are the numbers on the Roll for quarter ending 31st Dec, 1880 Average No. on Roll—Boys 181.6, girls 773.6; total 355.2. Average daily attendance —Boys 121.9, girls 103.9 : total 225.8 From the Head Master as follows : In accordance with circular No. 3o I beg to notify to the Committee my acceptance of the recent scale of payments instituted by the Education Board. From Mr E. Smith, second master, as follows: —Having received from the Board of Education the revised scale of payment for teachers, and wishing me to comply with same, I shall feel' happy to do so.
The Chairman explained, in answer to a question, that he had corresponded with the Chairman of the various school Committees re the pupils of the High School being allowed to compete for the prizes of the public schools, and the feeling seemed to exist that the matter should be left in the hands of the new Committee, the elections being so close.
Mr Storey moved u that the action of the chairman be approved, and that the matter be left in the hands of the incoming Committee” Seconded by Mi Russell, and carried. The tenders for the erection of the partition in the school were then opened and considered.
The following are the tenders : Wright and Tester, Ll 4 ; T. Thorp Ll 3 10s ; Clinch and Lloyd LlO 13s ; Mr Henderson L 9 18s 6d.
Mr Grey moved “ that the tender of Mr Henderson be accepted. Seconded by Mr Brown. Mr Storey moved, as an amendment, “ That the tender of Messrs Clinch and Lloyd be accepted. Seconded by Mr Harrop. On b ing put the amendment was declared lost, the Chairman voting for the motion. Tenders were then opened as follows for the office of Janitor to the school, viz T. Davis L 45 per annum : J Batterby L 32 ; J. Boulter, L3O. Mr Harrop moved that the tender of J. Boulter be accepted, and said, as the man was nearly blind and incapacitated fiom following hts usual calling, it would be a graceful act of the Committee to elect him, and moreover, as the principle of accepting the lowest tender had just been adopted by the Committee, it would only be consistent to elect the person he proposed. Mr Hooper seconded. Mr Russell moved, as an amendment, that the tender of [Johnathan Batterby be accepted. Seconded by Mr Gray.
On being put to the meeting the amend ment was declared carried, it being understood that a month’s notice should terminate the agreement.
Mr Russell enquired if the result of the late examination had been received. On being answered in the negative, Mr Russell moved ‘-That the Committee wishing to distribute the prizes before vacating their position as Committeemen, the secretary be instructed to write to Mr Hammond asking him to be good enough to forward the result of recent examina. tion of school before the 11th January, if possible” Seconded v Mr Hooper, and carried.
The Concert Committee for providing prizes for the pupils reported as the result of last entertainment the sum of £9 12s, and deducting from this rent of Hall £l, Herald account £l, Leader account 13s. showed a net result of £6 19sMr Store}' moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the Entertainment Committee, also to Mr Cox, Mr George Davy, and Mrs Gumming. Seconded by Mr Brown and carried
Mr Russell moved, and Mr Brown seconded, and it was carried “ That Messrs Wilson, Gray, Harrop and Hooper be a Committee for the purchase of prizes, and to distribute the same.” Be the election of members of the Board of Education, Mr Harrop moved “ That the matter be left in abeyance until the election of the new Committee.” Seconded by Mr Russell, and carried unanimously.
The following accounts were passed for payment • —T Davies, £l4 13s 4d ; Seererary, £3 Is 6d; P W Hutton, I4s 6d Temuka Leader, £1 U ; George Freddy 13s It being understood that Davies’ account be a first claim on the Committee
Mr Harrop moved “That the best thanks of the Committee be given to the Chairman for presiding over the meetings during the past 12 months ” Seconded by Mr Storey and carried unanimously Mr Storey moved “ that the Chairman and Messrs Harrop, Gray, and the secretary draw up the annual report and submit the same at a Committe meeting to be held two hours before the annual meeting. Seconded by Mr Russell and carried.
Messrs Gray and Harrop were appointed visitors for the month.^ A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings.
