Tuhi, the murderer of Miss Dome, was found guilty aod sentenced to death in Wellington, on Wednesday last. The Court was crowded throughout the trial.

Two men, whilst bathing in the Temuka River on Thursday, had a narrow escape from drowning. It appears the men found themselves suddenly in deep,water, and as neither of them could swim, their position was somewhat perilous. Luckily some persons were close by, who, on observing them, struggling in the water, went to their assistance, and promptly brought them to (he shore. The}* were much exhausted, and it was some time before they properly recover d; from the effects of the large quantity pf water consumed whilst immersed. The new Dog Registration Act comes into force on the first of January next. Its provisions as to damages occasioned by dogs are pretty severe, and it will be w-II for owners of dogs of unamiable dispositions to keep a sharp look look out for their favorites, or the latter may come to grief Section 16 runs as follows If any dog shall on any highway or unenclosed space rush at, attack, or startle any person or any horse, cattle, or other animal, whereby the life or limb of any person shall be endangered, or any property be injured or end angered such dog shall be liable to be immediately killed; and the o.vner of swell dog shall, on conviction, forfeit and pay a penalty or sum of not more ihan £5 for every such offence, over and above the amount of any damage which such dog shall have occasioned.”

Qn Tuesday last a public soiree was held in the Wesleyan Church, Waitohi. The tables, which were provided by Mesdames Marcroft, Campion, and the Misses Young were richly spread. After the good things had been partaken of, a public meeting was held. The proceedings were opened with singing and prayer, after, whicli the Chairman (Rev. W. S. Harper) spoke of his very great satisfaction at seeing so many people present, and then proceeded to make a short financial statement. From thus it appeared that the debt o i the church was a little over £3O. The proceeds of that evening would be about £l3, thus reducing the debt to about £lB, which they hope to clear off within the next five months. Interesting addresses were delivered by Messrs F. Smith, Allott, Butler, and the Rev. Mr McLennan (Presbyterian). The Chairman apologised for the absence of the Rev Mr Gordon, and stated that the rev. gentleman would conduct divme service there next Sabbath at 230 p.m. The choir, under the leadership of Mr Johnson, added much to the evening by singing, “Toiling On,” “Jerusalem,” “ Star of Bethleham,” “ Poland “Awake, Awake,” and “ Vve’re going Home to-morrow.” Votes of thanks h iviug been proposed by Mr Thomson (Pleas aut Point) to the ladies, and by the Rev. McLennan to the choir, a very enjoyable meeting then closed by the Chairman pronouncing the benediction.

The Temora Herald reports two cases of poisoning from overdoses of the potion kjipwn as painkill r, o e of whicii proved fatal. Xn th,e first instance a youtli named Avery,, in the employment of Mr E. M‘Evoy. of Middle Temora, succumbed to the effects of the crng, which he had taken in teaspoonfuls to relieve a pain in the chest up to noon Saturday last, when he was seen to fall asleep. In the evening the patient was found to be insensible, and Dr Ryley was called in, who took every means to resuscitate him, but without success, as the patient never ral ied. The second instance was that of an aged man named W. Scott, who was found suffering from similar effects ucder « dray, and was at once taken, to thp hospital, where, under Dr Ryley’s care, he is gradually progressing to wards recovery.

Saratoga has now another diamond lady one not being enough. The present candidate is Mrs Bell, of California. Her diamonds are said to be worth £50,000, and she is followed by a yalet, vyhp ia thei* custodian.
