DISTRICT PRIZE FIRING.

Eighteen members of the No 1 Temuka Rifle Volunteers paraded at the Volunteer Hall, at 10 o’clock yesterday morning, and were immediately marched to the new x-ifle range, to compete for the District prizes apportioned to the different corps in Canterbury. The amount allotted is £l7, divided into six prizes, viz., Ist, £4 ; 2nd } £3 ; three prizes of £2 each, and four of £1 each. The ranges were—4oo, 500 and 600 yards ; target, 6x6, bull’s eye 2 ft square, centre 4 ft.; position any ; seven shots at each range. Captain Young was present and superintended at the butts, and Drill. Instructor Dundas superintended at the firing point for the Government. The weather was not favorable for good shooting, a high wind blowing across the range the whole time. There is no doubt; that the bad shooting yesterday is also to be attributed to the fact that the target used has only recently been placed in position, and consequently the men have had little or no practice at the long ranges. We certainly think that, taking into consideration that the range has only lately been completed, and the time allowed for taking part in the competition does not expire before the end of the month, more time ought to have been allowed for practice, par. ticularly as they have to compete against the best shots of Christchnrch for the prizes. There were a few spectators present at the firing, including several ladies. It is necessary that the Christchurch competition should take place before the result is finally decided, We append the scores
