POT VALIANT.

We take the following from the S.C. Times of Thursday . Beawick Btreet was the scene of a somewhat exciting collision last night between a knight of the thimble, named Edwin Best, and an elderly and usually well-con-ducted resident, named Thomas Hawley. It appears that Hawley, being of, a dangerously exciteable temperament when under the "influence," has been a total abstainer for a considerable period, and his conduot has been most exemplary. Unfortunately the holidays proved too much for him, and "Wednesday evening he appeared at Best's establishment in a noisily argumentative condition. Best, being glad of the chance to prove himself the better man, and remembering "that an Englishman's house is his castle, ejected Hawley into the street, whereupon Hawley made a threatening gesture, and swore he would "fix him." At this interesting moment a hyatacder seized _ tJawley's arm, and wrenched from his grasp a revolver. Hawley ran off, but later on was arrested. The revolver, ofl being ex amined was found %o be, loaded in five chambers. To-day he figured before Mr Woollcombe, J.P., on i. charge of " attempting to present firearms with intent to kill and murder," but as the poJice were not prepared to proceed with case, the accused was remanded till to. morrow. i
