OUR VOLUNTEERS.

MONTHLY INSPECTION. The usual monthly inspection of the No 1 Temuka Uiflo Volunteers was held on Friday evening las', iu the Volunteer Hall. Captain Young was the inspecting officer. Present—l captain, 2 lieutenants, 32 rank and file, and 15 band After inspection, the company marched the town, headed by the drum and fife band. The company presented a very neat appearance, and showed a decided improvement in their marching. An improvement was aUo noticable iu the playing of the bund. MEETING. The' monthly meeting of the company was held in the Hall, immediately after parade. Captain Young occupied tlie chair A letter was read from the Defence Office intimating that the capitation a.lowance won d cease on and aftei the 3isl Dccembei next. On the question being put to tiie company whether, iu the face of the intimation read, they would continue their services, it was unanimously resolved to do so. A letter was also read from Mr AVoudhead, sen., offering to procure colours for the company from home. The offer was accepted with cheers. It was oecided to hold a church parade on Sunday next, at the Wesleyan Church. There being no other business, tlie meeting concluded. THK SHAM FIGHT. The arrangements for the above to day are as follows :—Tue Temuka Rifles will parade at 7 o’clock this morning, at the Volunteer Hall, and proceed from there to tlie Opihi railway bridge, where they will take up a position on the defensive. Tlie C Battery Artillery and Volunteer Cadets leave Timaru by tlie first train for Arowhenua, where they will land. They will then advance from that point and commence the attack on the town. Tlie Temuka Rifles will be reinforced by a contingent of the Ashburton Volunteers, who are expected to arrive by the 9.40 train. The engagement is expected to be over, and the town in the hands of the enehiy, by 11a.m. A review will then take place. A luncheon will be provided for the visitors, after which it is expected a scratch match at shooting will be arranged for the afternoon.
