A letter was read from the Manager of the National Rank with reference to the deposit of £4OOO in four sums of six months, on Opihi bridge account. Four per cent, interest would be allowed if the deposit remained unbroken for six months; three per cent if only for three months. Mr Mendelson explained that thp deposit was not made for more than six months, as it was judged probable that the money would be required within'that time.

SLAUGHTERHOUS 'S s.

The report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses for the month was read. He re commended that the slaughter - houses should be floored with concrete or asphalte, and that pigs should not be allowed to coma within a certain distance of the sheds, say 100 yards. It was decided that the Inspector should report of uncleanliness, and that steps be taken to compel the licensees to keep their premises clean on pain of forfeiture of license.

CONTROL OP A BOUNDARY ROAD. A letter was read from the Mount Peel Eoad Board, requesting the Council to declare which of the two Boards—the Geraldine or the Mount Peel Board—should have charge of the boundary road between the two districts, from the Raugitata traffic bridge to section 3022. The Geraldine Road Board had forwarded a resolution expressing willingness to take charge of half the road. Deputations of members of the Geraldine Road Board, consisting of Mr W, Postlethwaite (Chairman of the Board) and Messrs Flatrnan and Slack, with Mr Shiers (Overseer to the Board) ; and Mr Kippenberger (for Messrs Whiteand Jameson) with Mr . Irvine (Overseer to the Board) appeared on behalf of the Mount Peel Board, to state each side of the question, Mr Tripp, Chairman of the Council, being a member of the Mount Peel Road Board, left the chair while the matter was being discussed, Mr Sealy being voted to his place. After a lengthy discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Aclon, seconded by Mr Mendelson, that the application be adjourned, awaiting distinct information on the following points, viz., a plan of setting forth what has been been done to the road, at what cost, and by whom incurred.; the names and acreage of owners abutting on the road oeach side of the road, and the ratable value of each property.

TIMARU HOSPITAL. . Mr T: W. Hall, on behalf of the Hospital Commissioners, w’aitedonthe Council to £j,sk for pecuniary assistance to the Rospital, Messrs S-aly, Acton, and Mendelson, having been appointed by the Council as a committee, at its previous meeting, to confer with the Borough Council on the subject of hospital and charitable aid, reported to the Couucil the action they had taken in the matter, and It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Sealy, seconded by Mr Acton, in reply to Mr Hall’s appeal, to contribute £BO being two-thirds of the deficiency in the Hospital funds, it being supposed that the Borough Council would grant the remainder.

Mr Hall thanked the Council for their response to his request and withdrew.

OPIHI BRIDGE Mr Talbot, Chairman of the Temuka Road Board, and Mr Quinn, another member of the Board, waited on the Cohncil with reference to the bridging of the Opihi river. Mr Talbot said he would ask, in the first place, whether any decision had been at rived at as to which body should carry out the work. The Chairman said he understood the Council would delegate the work to the Temuka Road Board,. Mr Acton moved, and Mr Mendelson seconded—“ That under section 188 of th e Counties Act 1876, the Temuka Road Board be requested to obtain by public advertisement various plans and estimates of cost of a bridge oyer the Opihi river, for timber, cylinders, or iron piles, the cost of obtaining such plans to be defrayed by the Council.” Mr Wilson agreed with the resolution so fur as it went, hut it did not go far enough It should have expressed a decision that the Temuka Road Board should carry out the work. The Council did not wish to do it themselves, and under the circumstances it was only fair that a definite promise should be given. It might effect the Board’s dealing with its funds. The resolution as it stood was unjust to the Board ; it simply put them to incovenience without any guarantee of future considera* tiqn.

Mr Mendelson said that speaking as a Temuka man, the resolution went £IOOO beyond his expectation.

Mr Sealy would object to the Council delegating its powers until the probable cost of the work was ascertained, or they might be committed to ap expenditure quite beyond their means. Mr Talbot objected that the Board's position was not defined as it ought to be. They only sought, however, to get tlie matter pushed on. The resolution was carried unanimously ft being agreed that if the Board thought it advisable a bonus of £IOO should bo offered fop the best plan. OHOU BRIDGE. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Clulee, seconded by Mr Sealy—“ That in reply to the letter of the Waitaki County Council, referring to the bridging of tfre Ohou river, they be informed that this Council have obtained estimates of the same, which show that the cost would be much greater than was reported by their engineer, and regi’et that of present this Council is not in a position to undertake the expense of half the cost of the same.’ Also., “That the thanks of the Council be forwarded to the Mount Cook Road Board for allowing their engineer to supply the valuable information contained in his report in connection with the Ohou bridge.”
