BY TELEGRAPH. To-day’s official telegrams from the Constabulary camp report that the fencers did notjnake their usual advance and retirement this morning, a< it was raining heavily. It is supposed they were deterred by the unfavc rable weather. Two horse?, belonging to a contractor, were found by the Maoris trespassing on the wheat, crops, and w re impounded by the Nrtives, who took them to Parihaka. It appears that the contractor’s men had disobeyed hia instruc tions, which were to keep his horses tethered, so as to prevent their doing any mischief to the Natives’ crops. The Premier left town by th'u afternoon’s train for the Wairarapa, where he intends spending a few days. He wil return to Wellington in the early part of next week. It is stated on good authority that the services of between forty an.l fifty salaried officers of the Public Works Department have been dispensed with during tha last three months. This list does not include any of the wages ” classs but wholly refers to officers in the professional and clerical branches of the department. It is reported that Captain Johnstone late secretary to the Marine department has declined to accept office in a lower grade, and has elected! t retire from the service on compensation allowance.
