We would draw attention to a lecture to be given by Mr J. J. Crofts on spiritualism, in the Volunteer Hall, this evening. All the Southern papers speak highly of Mr Crofts as a lecturer, and as the subject is an interesting one, we hope to see a good attendance.
We were yesterday shown by the Secretary of Si. George’s Lodge of Freemasons, Temuka, the charter of the lodge just received from home. It has scarce been our lot to see such a work of art, the engrossing being simply perfect, and bearing, as it does, the signature of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, the Grand Master of England, should be highly prized by the craft.
Joe, the Fijian, has been sentenced to death for the murders recently committed in Auckland.
The Timarn Harbour Board, at a meeting held on Thursday last, resolved to reduce the salaries of the officers by 10 pe r cent, notwithstanding the fact that the Board wi 1 have £OO,OOO of the original grant of £IOO,OOO in hand after the completion of the present contract.
Although no official intimation has been received here of the appointment Mr Warder Stratford as the future Resident Magistrate for the Geraldine and Ashburton Counties, yet we have every reason to believe he is to be Mr Guinness’s successor. The following, from the Queenstown correspondent of the O.D. Times , of Oct 2, will no doubt be of interest to our readers :—“ Yesterday, on the occasion of Mr Stratfor I, R.M., holding liis last sitting of Court prior to leaving the district for Ashburton, Mr Wesley Turton, Crown Prosecutor, on behalf of the Bar, expressed the regret that the legal profession felt at Mr Stratford’s removal, and wished him every prosperity in his new district. Mr Stratford, in replying thanked the learned counsel for his good wishes in suitable terms. Some surprise wag experienced at the late telegrams appearing in the Dunedin papers, stating that the residents were jubilant at the W arden’a removal, as such is not the case. It is, however, pretty well understood that the gender ot such telegram bad a personal bias ” As will be seen by advertisement the Oddfellows in Temuka intend bolding their annual sports on Boxing Day. Over £SO will be given away in prizes.
The Committee of the Kakahu district school he.d their regular monthly mettingon Monday evening 4th inst. There were present Messrs Leary, Beattie, Hay, and Kellan 1. The minutes of the pievious meeting were read and confirmed. A circular has read from the Board informing the Committee that as the incidental grant for the quarter ending 20th September had been paid in full, the usual reduction would have to be deducted from the next quarterly payment. Vouchers for salaries were also received . Mr Sutherland applied to the Committee fer leave ot absence from November sth to the 10th. On the motion of Mr Leary, seconded by Mr Hay, it was agreed—- “ That Mr Sutherland’s application be granted.” Mr Wheelband’s account for planting was ordered to be paid, and the meeting terminated.

The chess match be'ween Messrs Bolton and Mason, of the Temuka, and Messrs Pish and Hughes, of the Geraldine Gh-ss Clubs took place in the Temuka Mechanics’ Institute on Wednesday evening last. Five games were contested at each board, play commencing at 7.45 o'clock and terminating at 11.45 o’clock, resultmgin the Temuka playears winning the match by seven games and one draw to two games and one one draw to two games and one draw. Mr Bolton won four games and drew one with Mr Fish ; Mr M:;son won three and lost two with Mr Hughes. The drawn game between Messrs Bolton Spd Fish wass most peculiar one, the
first-named player having a pawn on his Kingis Rooks seventh, the King being on the King’s Rook’s eighth, the latter [ layer having the move, with a Queen on King’s Knight’s third and King on Queen’s Kook’s fifth. According to the Dunedin Herald a rum her of forged bank notes were circulated in Dunedin last week. The notes originally represented one pound each, but they had been alteied to five and ten pound notes. The,, forgery was very cleverly executed, and to disarm suspicion the high numbers on the one pound notes hail been reduced by obliterating the last figure. If the bad notes are held to the light the forgery becomes apparent, as the paper is much thinner where tho figures have been altered.
