Melbourne, Oct. 1 Arrived—Te Anau„ from the Blaff. The Legislative Council la?t night reject 3d payment to its own members, bat passed the clauses of the Bill providing for payment to members of the Assembly. A further animated debat? look placein the Assembly last night regarding the recent insmissa's from the publicservice. The Totalisator Bill was read a third time, aad Parliament adjourned to October 19th, when the Budget will be presented. The arrangements which were mad e for the opening of the Exhibition were generally excellent, and there was nohitch of any kind. The streets were thronged by crowds of people, who were very orderly. A brilliant illumination took place in the harbour at night r and the sky being clear there were numerous spectators. , Sydney, Oct. 1. Arrived—Albion, from New Zealand. Hennessy's branday, case, 35s 31 ta 35s 6d ; bulk, quarters. 10s 6d to lo» 9d, New Zealand wheat, 4s ; New Zealand oats, Is 9d to 2s ; maize, 2s to 2i 3d. Oct. 2. The attendance at the opening ceremony yesterday was 6500 and 15ooovisited the exhibition daring the day. Many officers of the Lands Department have received notice that their services will be no longer l-equired. The Hunt meeting was held to-day. There was a small attendance of the public. The results were, :—Hurdles r Pemberley, 1 ; Kingston, 2. HuntCnp t Highflyer, 1 ; Symphon, 2 ; Marquis 3 ; won easily. Flat Race : Monarque* 1 ; Douglaston, 2 ; Gossip, 3 ; time F —lmin. 52secs^ The Queen has replied to His Excellency the Marquis of Normanby's telegram announcing the opening of the Melbourne International Exhibition, and wishing it every success.
