Mr Peacock’s resolution to the effect that the Legislative Council should re-, quest the Government to exclude from the estimates the honorarium Ooun-. cillors (says the Post) raised a deal of indignation in that august- assembly, subjected the mover to a good - deal of abuse, and was crushed out in the most - emphatic manner, only ihe mover voting, for it. SirF. D. Bell said he should like to see the motion amended, so as to apply only to Mr Peacock himself. The latter was seeking a little cheap popularity with his motion, but if ho wanted to set an example he could refuse his |-n honorarium—instead of that he i
•would go fast enough to the Treasury to takSpTit.—(Hear, hear.) After som further remarks of this nature, Mr Peacock rose to order, saying that this was abuse, not argument. The speaker , ruled Sir Dillon to be in order, and % latter fired a “ Parthian shot by ing that Mr Peacock hud not the knofh ledge or experience which would justify his teaching him (Sir F. D. 33dl} ; and he would repeat his and conclude with the; reraaik with which Mr Gladstone had snuffed out a troublesome ‘ member— ‘‘ We don’t want your resolutions, and we don’t want you.” After several other members had spoken against the .motion, it was rejected The following is the division list:—Aye (1) —Peacock. Noes (29) —-Acland, Baillie, Bell, Brett, P. Buckley, Chamberlin, Dignan, Fraser, Hart, Johnston, Johnson, Koheie, Lahmann, Mantel), Martin, Mer.zies, Miller, Paterson, Pharazyn, Pollen, Reynolds, Richmond, Scotland, Taiaroa, Waterhouse, Whitaker, Wilson, Wood. Dr Grace and Sir Wm. Fitzherbert did nut vote.
