GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The Usyial monthly meeting of the Geraldine Bpard was held on the 13th in it. PRESENT. Messrs Win. Postlethwaite (Chairman), Wm. De Renzy, John Godsell, Fredrick R. Ehitman,. and Win. Upton Slack. The minutes of tho last meeting were read and confirmed.

The following correspondence was read and considered . From the Geraldine County Council, dated July 7th, asking particulars, as to value of rateable property In thoG'-rah’ine Rid’ng for the year ending 3lst March, 1879, and amount of ra es collected ; also, what amount had been paid by this Board to the Colonial Treasurer for Hospitals and Charitable Aid during the year ending 31st December, 1879. Resolved—“ That the Olerk supply the infonua-ron.” From Mr Allan Macdonald dated 12pp July, asking a nfu;;d for cost of fence around the reserve. Resolved application on the ground that other ratepayers have had to pay for similar work done.” From Mr David Shaw, dated 13th July, asking the Board to provide a gate and. posts in front of gravel reserve, and he will put Pm same up in continuation of h's fence.—GrantedProm the Colonial Secretary, Wellington dated 28th June, requesting the Board to proceed with such local works as will give employment to'a number of men, so as to relieve t ho existing depression in the labor market. Resolwd—“ That a copy of last years report of the Board be forwarded to the Government, pointing out that at the present time over L 10( 0 is expended each month ; that the Boar-1 considers that at the present time there are more unemployed in the district than can be profitably employed ; also, pointing out that the present contractors are not making as much as contractors under Government.”

From Mr Wm. Hanna, dated 12th July, requesting the Board to make the road passable through sections 10900 ami 10604.

Resolved—“ That the Board do no feel disposed to extend so much money as the road will cost to benefit unoccupied land, and without benefit to (ho public at large.”

From Mr W. S. Maslin, and others, dated Jtdy 12th, asking the Board to shingle the roads in his ' township.—The work to be done.

From Mr J. W. Jones, dated July 10th, asking the Board to improve the road leading to his bush. —Tenders to be in vited.

from Mr Win. Hawke, dated July 13: li, with reference to the river washing away his land.—The Overseer to inspect.

From Mr K. Cameron and others, dated July Btb, asking the Board to improve the road on (he Orari Reserve. The Board lias already made arrangements for opening up the lots sold on reserve 389. Fiom Mr Win. Tayne and others, requesting the Board to improve the road leading towards Winchester.

Resolved—“ That the Board Iras decided to make the road between lots 1.5, IG, 23 and 33, therefore it is not desirable to make another road which is only 30 chains from it.”

From Mr W. B. Kindley, dated 21st June, asking the Board co cause the fenco to be trimmed on the road in front of Mr Young’s house. —The Board has asked the person named in the letter to attend to it.

From Mr Michael Cook, dated July 12th asking the Board to fence the gravel reserve near Evans, Resolved —“ That the Board give the posts and rails to fence the part next Ito reserve.”

From Mr Hugh Shanks, dated 14th July, re his contract at the Rang! tat a. From George Purdio and Co., dated July 12(h, enclosing account for L6O for fencing reserves.

Resolved—“ That L2O- be paid.” Mr A, W. McDonald waited Upon the Board to got the Penalty which h .d been deducted out of the balance upon his contnmi refunded.

Resolved—“ That as Mr McDonald did not commence on his contract for several we ks after taking it, and on this account had not finished the contract in time, tlr Board could not grant his request.” Mr Joseph Lewis asked the Board to pay him for gravel taken out of the riverbed near his land

Mr Lewis had been requested to get nr. order trom the contraclor, but failing to obtain an order as the contractor acting was under ths Overseer's instructions, it was fineilydecicled to. ascertain who the bind belonged to

Mr Irishman asked the Board to make the road passable near the sheep dip in Beautiful Valley ; also near Sullivan’s hut.—The Overseer to report upon the

application. Mr McDongall asked to have the road repaired near the lime kilns. Resolved—“ That the work be done”

The Overseer's report was read, and the following resolutions passed thereon; (s) the Overseer’s conduct is approved in not passing Herlihy’s and Shank's contracts as neither are satisfactory, (2) Sk;.nks had buried big stones in the centre of the Road—The stones mus< be raised again before final payment. (3) the pen bios to bo imposed on Herlihy’s contract from Ist June ami on Reid’s contract from the 13th July on Raukapuka Downs. (4) Tenders to be invited for Waili terrace road and Gapes Valley road the contracts for which have been thrown Ujj since last Board day, and the parties not allowed to tender again for six months. (5) The damage, done to roads and river crossings by the late flood to be left for the Overseer to attend to. (6) Repairs to be done to Valley Point as suggested by the Overseer. (7) Also to the Pleasant Valley footbridge, as per the Overseer’s report, (8) Tenders to be invited for footbridge near Chapman’s corner. (9) Resolved— (i That the Board is of opinion it is not desirable to increase th i cost of erecting footbridges in the district b'*yond the cost of these erected at Peckham’s crossing and Pleasant Valley.” (10) Tenders to bo invited for repaying road near Rangitata Bush.

Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Mr Flatmau, and carried —“That L. 7000 be placed as a fixed deposit in the Bank of New Sonin Wales, Geraldine for M2 months, in one sum of L 5900 and four sums of L 500.”

Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Mr De Renzy, and carried—“ That LBOOO be placed as a fixed deposit in the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, for 12 months, in one sum of LSOOO, two sums of LIOOO, and two sums of LSOO. ”

Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Mr Flatman, and carried—“ That Mr Hardcastle, !ho member for this district, be respectfully asked to protest against a rate being struck by the Geraldine County Council far the purpose of bridging the Opihi river, as this district would derive no benefit from sivh a work being carried out, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Mount Cook and Mount Pee Road Boards, respectfully asking them to support the above resolution.’ * Proposed by Mr Flahnan, seconded by Mr Slack, and carried—“ That Reserves Nos, 1001,1065, 1374 and 1572 he planted and that the Overseer make arrangements to have the holes dug and tenders called for trees and planting by next Board day ; also that the Overseer have* a bank thrown up find gorso planted around tie fenced reserves.”

A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned until the second Tuesday in August
