Auckland, July 17. Mr S. C. Caulton's Tregagle has died of glanders. He was not very succesful on the turf, and latterly has been used for stud purposes. The editor of the Free Lance in to-day's issue gives an emphatic denial to the statement telegraphed South that a member of the Froliques had called at the office and pulled his nose on account of editorial strictures.
Messrs Buchanan hav3 -just completed an obeleisk, made by them to order of the local natives of Pain, Bay of Islands, in memorial of signing the Treaty of Waitangi. At the base of the pedestal there will be four tablets giving the text of the Treaty. From this base, which is eight feet high, an obelisk, with the names, rises nine feet, making a total height of 17 feet. . It is of Oamaru stone, and the order was given to the firm by the natives, who have already built a ball in honor of the event so momentous in the history of the colony. Napier July, 18. Mr Birch, Sheriff for the Province went to Hasting's* property, Mount Vernon yesterday, to interview the natives who have refused to give up pospssion in spite of the Supremo Couit. He wont to serve a writ of ejection, talcing the bailiff and constables with The natives seemed to bo proceeding in good part, but pressed for a delay. This Mr Birch refused, and said ho mnst leave, a man in possesisn. The Maori asked who would feed him, and one quoted Scripture, saying thuy were compelled to fed their enemy when hungry, and give them drink when thirsty ; but that did not apply to the- bailiff, and they would not give him anything. Mr Birch consented to wait till Monday, when ITenare Mataura will arrive.
At the annual mteting of the ratepayers in several of the road districts of Hawkes Bay' the question of local Government was discussed, and at each placo where the subject was broached, the opinion was in favour of the Road Boards as opposed to the County Council system. In the Ocro road district the expenses were only three-quarters per cent on the receipts, while they amounted to between 20 and 30 per cent in the County, Councils,

A. supplementary " Gazette " publishes an Order in Council, fixing the annual examination of candidates for teachers' certificates to take place on the first week in each year. Candidates must give notice not later than Ist November preceding, and pay a fine of £1 The " Gazette " contains a list of tea-tcher*-at present holding licenses, The mail steamer City of Sydney, with the London niaib of the loth June, left Sau Francisco on the 4th inst, one day before due date, and the Australia, with the June colonial mails, arrived on July 21th. one day in advance of contract date.
