KAKAHU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

In consequence of the rivers beingflooded on Monday, the sth inst., the regular monthly meeting of the Committee had to be postponed to Monday, the 12th, when there were present Messrs Beattie, Duncan, Godsell, Hay, and Ke land. The minuses of the last meeting were read and approved. The following correspondence was read and considered ;

“I. From the Board re the compulsory attendance at school, and requesting the cooperation of the committee in the fulfilment of the requirements of the Act ; also pointing out that the Government capita tion grant to the Board is seriously affected by irregular attendance at school.

2 From the same, informing the Com mittee (in re the compulsory clauses of the Act) that if they find it r.eccssnry to summon defaulting parents and object to undertake the duty, the Board is prepared to take over the responsibility.

3. Calling the attention of the Com mittee to the establishment of a Deaf and Dumb Institution at Sumner, near ■■Christ church, and stating that if any case came under the notice of the Committee, likely to be benefited by a course of training in such an institution, they should coramuni cate with the Secretary to the Board. 4. Enclosing salaries to the end of June.

Proposed by Mr Duncan, seconded by Mr Godsell, and carried, “That the com pulsory clauses of the Education Act be brought into force in this district.” On the motion of Mr Hay, seconded by Mr. Duncan, it was agreed “That in future no child be admitted into the school under five years of age.” The meeting were of opinion that children of more tender years could not possibly receive any benefit from attending, and must necessarily interfere with the proper working of the school. The Chairman was requested to make the best arrangement he could to get the planting done immediately. The salaries for the month end iug 30th June were paid ; also L2 10s for cleaning the school room for the quarter ending 30th Juno. The meeting then ad jcurned to the first Monday in August.
